Pat:
The database currently states that commercial 45 copies of the Police's "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" all run 4:09. However, abagon has reported to me that his commercial copy actually runs 4:05, not 4:09 as stated on the record label. If you have a commercial 45 in your possession, would you mind re-timing it and letting us know if your results are in agreement with abagon?

The timing for this song came from one of Joel Whitburn's books and was not timed by myself so I am sure that Abagon is correct with his stop watch timing of (4:05).

Anyone know how to create the 3:12 DJ version?

I'll have to check to be sure, but I believe it's just one edit on the intro (cutting it in half) and an early fade.

Was there not a release of this song that had the first chorus cut in half, as well as the intro half-time as well?
I can send Aaron what I recreated.

Jody, the version you have is not the DJ edit. The true DJ edit has the full first chorus in tact, and it fades before the last chorus is done, completely removing the instrumental ending.

Ouch - I would have found such a version a great disappointment, especially with the end missing. No one ever played that version here in Southern Ontario or Western New York. (I actually prefer my edit...lol).
But thanks for the info Aaron. I realize that the true objective is to find genuine radio edits, not custom made ones.

I just came across an interesting promo of this song...one
side is in Spanish, the other side Japanese. It's on the
red and black "target" A&M label, (P) 1980, catalog #
25000...I'm guessing a promo-only release since at the
time A&M was using 4-digit catalog numbers on their
singles. Listed time 4:00.

Nice find, Hykker! That's pretty uncommon, and even moreso
since it was left off the 1993 box set.
I have this on vinyl, but I don't think it looks like
yours. (I'm going from memory here.) I'm pretty sure it's
a foreign pressing, since I think it has a picture sleeve
and the silver label. (From Canada, maybe?)
My notes aren't helpful, except that they indicate that
there are needledrops of both sides on the 1998 promo CD
B.L.A.S.T. #34.

Does anyone know the time the DJ Edit begins to fade from the LP Version?

On a side note, does anyone know where to find the unreleased De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da '86 version in lossless? If I recall it was on a rare SACD that was issued a few decades ago but I can't confirm.
Huge Police fan, just looking to add it to my collection.

I bought this 45 when it first came out. It may have been a promo, but it was
sold at record stores in a normal fashion (I bought mine at Tower Records).
All copies I saw had the picture sleeve:

In the event Gary is still part of the discussion from
2017, once you make the edit in the intro simply fade from
3:00 to 3:12.

The Spanish Version is somewhat rare, but it was issued on CD format back in 1995 via Polydor Records and only in North America and Japan (and in a handful of South / Central American countries), "Stars In Spanish":
https://www.discogs.com/Various-Stars-In-Spanish/release/181 9636
Many of the songs included in this compilation originally appeared as the English-version's single's B-side.
I am still waiting for The Jets' "Allá Tú" to appear on CD format. Grrrr!

I was just thinking about the '86 version myself and
looked on Discogs. It seems that all the SACD listings of
the "Every Breath You Take - The Classics" compilation
just list the regular title of the song, with no
indication that it's the '86 version. Does anyone have
the SACD and can let us know what version is on there?

I’m not sure what version it is, but if you play the 5.1 layer of the
Every Breath You Take: The Classics SACD,
you definitely hear a unique version of the song. I don’t remember it
being on any other layer of the disc...

Yes that's the 86 version on the SACD....
