Although not in the database, this song peaked at #37 in Billboard in 12/76. Not on any U.S. CD that I know of, I finally splurged and picked up his self-titled LP on a Japanese CD, issued in 2006. It is from a series called "Groove Diggers", with the label/catalog info being (P-Vine PCD-23853). It is from a tape source, with nice sound quality. Incidentally, my commercial 45, confirmed as Ariola America 7625, has a listed time of (3:16), but an actual time of (3:20), whereas my CD version runs a second shorter, at (3:19).

I'll have to see if I have that 45 and dig it out if I do. I don't even know how the song goes. I didn't know it wasn't on any US CD - because of it being one of those top 40 hits that are not listed in the database/books.

If I didn't know better, I'd swear it was Stevie Wonder singing this song!

The LP track of the "Anything You Want" has (3:21) of the actual running time, the listed Time is "3:16" on the record labe. (The LP title "Anything You Want" by "JOHN VALENTI" Ariola America ST 50012).

Although "P-Vine Records" is an indies label in Japan. Those CDs are distributed by one of the major labels "BMG".

Hey there - this mp3 came up on my iPod yesterday so I thought I'd check the history of it on the chat board. Jimct, did you order your CD from Amazon or via another route? It's available on Amazon but it's about $40. I've always loved that single and my mp3 was made from it, but the sound quality is not great. (I don't have the technical skills of most of you here!) Thanks.

Frank

Frank, it's been awhile since I bought it, but I'm 99% sure I did buy it through
Amazon. As I recall, I did pay at least $35 bucks for it. I'm a Top 40
completion-ist, and it wasn't anywhere else on CD, so I just decided to pay
the premium price for it.

P-Vine Records specializes in blues and obscure R&B music reissues. This type material is their specialty.

Turns out this song hit the top 10 on Billboard's Hot Soul Singles chart towards the end of 1976. I'm sure plenty of listeners thought it
was Stevie too.

His group prior to being solo was called Puzzle. (At that time he used a
different last name). They sounded much like Chicago. It was strange
because they were on Motown. Check out songs like You Make Me
Happy, On With the Show, Brand New World and Lady. All got airplay in
Chicago on WBBM-FM in the 70’s.

It's a shame that John and Stevie couldn't come up with an original sound instead, had to borrow from Jamiroquai. :)
