Although not in the database, this song peaked at #38 in Billboard in 9/71. My commercial 45, which is mono and confirmed as Motown 1188, has a listed time of (2:53), but an actual time of (2:38). While it is due to make its 45 appearance on the new, Motown Singles Box, Vol. 11B (and I will report back then on the particulars for this song), the only CD I curently own that SAYS song is included is on her "Forever" Box Set. I had always heard very bad reviews about this set, things like, "Diana's People" were completely in charge of putting it together, they weren't professional masterers", and made a mess of it. Well, I just popped in the proper disc/track from this set, that's supposed to be the song "Surrender", and to me it sounds like it's a completely different song instead! Incredible! From a company normally SO expert at producing complete and comprehensive artist compilations, in my opinion Diana Ross' Motown years has been anthologized 10,000 times more poorly than ANY other artist in the history of Motown! Man, imagine what would've happened with it if she weren't Berry's "favorite!"

Yes! Mine is like that too. First pressings accidentally used the song "I Can't Give Back the Love I Feel for You" instead of "Surrender." It was corrected in later pressings, I remember reading at the time (in the "Ice" CD newsletter, I think).

Surprising that "I Can't Give Back..." is mono on the set. Motown wasn't doing mono albums anymore, not in the U.S., anyway.

(Jeez, seems like a lifetime ago that there was no Internet and you actually had to subscribe to a paper newsletter to read about upcoming releases. Or hunt for hard-to-find discs in paper magazines like "Record Collector," then call the record store to have them hold the disc until they received your check. Whew!)

Not to hijack this thread, but would you care to share your best current on-line sources for new releases, Brian W.??? I started buying "ice" monthly in 1994, when I probably owned all of 10 CDs at the time (still bought everything on cassette, since 90% of the new releases in the magazine were issued on tape as well), and stuck w/ it for 12 years, all the way up until it ceased publication w/ the March 2006 issue. :-( Needless to say, I was EXTREMELY disappointed to see "ice" go; despite the subsequent advent of the 'net, it was w/o question my primary source for new U.S. releases up until three years ago, as I found it to be quite accurate, in-depth, and informative (inc. their "CD Watchdog" column). And frankly, beyond the All Music Guide and Pause and Play (neither that great, IMO), as well as subscribing to some music-chain newsletters, for me, tracking new releases just hasn't been the same since! (Especially since the vast majority of new releases that I look for are re-issues or "from the vault" - not the latest from the Jonas Brothers or Akon, which is what the music chains seem to focus on!) Alas, in the last 10 months, I've probably bought all of a dozen new releases, due to a combination of a lack of in-depth new-release sources on the level of "ice", and what appears to be a fast-shrinking market of new re-issue/"vault" releases from week to week (here in the U.S., anyway), so any info appreciated...

Oh, and while I've frequently used eBay for the out-of-print and hard-to-find stuff over the last 10 years (just ask aaronk, lol) - and have also been buying "Goldmine" religiously for over 22 years now - I still find that nothing is more fun & fruitful than hitting the road and getting my hands dirty in the mom-and-pop brick-and-mortar stores. (Just have to drive a little further now - *sigh*...) :-)

Hmm... I generally just read about them on BSN or SteveHoffman.tv. Or here. I don't really have a specific website or other publication that I get that info from anymore.

The only thing that comes close to "ice" for me is one you already mentioned, "Pause and Play". But I don't find it to be as medicore as you do. It may not list 100% of reissue releases but they do have a lot of US, UK & Australian releases. Come to think of it, they probably don't have any Japan releases, and may not have much for Germany. But I haven't really found any site that gives a week-by-week release schedule (for oldies & newies) that's more comprehensive than this one. Anyone have any better suggestions?

Sorry, but I have to disagree. P&P doesn't have even a third of the number of new releases that "ice" used to list, and lately it seems like half the re-issues/compilations that they DO show are either exclusively "MP3 Downloads" (call me old-fashioned, but I still prefer to collect my music in PHYSICAL formats) or LPs (again, not a huge fan of vinyl, so those listings do nothing for me, either)!

And then there's the stuff they miss altogether. Case in point: About a week ago, I accidentally discovered through eBay that Crosby, Stills & Nash's 1983 album, "Allies" (which features their near-top 40 hit, "War Games"), was about to be re-issued on Rhino! Atlantic did originally issue "Allies" on CD briefly here in the U.S. in the mid '80s, but since it was never a big seller of theirs, it was quickly deleted, and those originals currently fetch $75-$100 on eBay. I do have "Allies" on cassette, but it's a title I've wanted on CD as well for several years now, but not at the cost of a Benjamin - and I've yet to stumble across one in my extensive travels to used CD stores. The new re-issue supposedly came out yesterday (January 27), yet P&P has never listed it! To be fair, it appears that this new edition from Rhino may have been pushed back; CD Universe now shows it as "backordered", although Amazon still lists it as available w/ shipping in 1-3 weeks. But regardless, even if it has been delayed, that still doesn't excuse P&P from not at least listing "Allies" under their "More Upcoming Releases" list (the one that shows titles "without exact release dates"). Ah, but I guess they feel that CSN were never popular enough to be worth mentioning...

So again, I remain frustrated at not having a single source as authoritative as "ice", and having to take the time to piece together what ultimately amounts to just a half-decent list from multiple sources! More and more, like w/ "Allies", it seems that lately I just stumble across new-release info accidentally, whether it's through eBay or other sites/sources. Another example: If you're into '70s & '80s rock/AOR like I am, there's an excellent re-issue label out of the U.K. that's fairly new called Rock Candy; none of their recent releases have been listed on P&P, either...

I do find that All Music Guide is a bit better than P&P when it comes to imports and slightly lesser-known acts...

I check out All Music Guide for things like songwriter credits, but do they have a way to use the search engine to learn the new (reissue) releases of the week? (Or do they just have a listing/page for that?) If you want to know what reissues are coming out this week, is there any way to do it without going to every single artist in existence and see if a new addition was added to their discography that week?

Yep. On their home page, just click on "New Releases" under the "site menu" in the upper right corner. It then takes you to that page, where you'll then have three choices: 1) "Just Released", which is the current week's list of all newly-recorded albums, 2) "Reissues", for compilations and new editions of old titles, and 3) "Upcoming Releases", for titles due out soon. There's a link under each one that says "Click here for full list." :-) You can also sign up for their weekly e-mail newsletter that details new releases - but again, whether you use the web site or the e-mail newsletter, I find they're not exactly complete, either...

Thanks for the great tip. I didn't even know they had that. Besides upcoming reissue releases and this week's, is there a way to go back week by week and see what the reissues were in, say, the past 1 or 2 months?

On the new Motown Singles Box Vol. 11B, "Surrender" is in (M), and runs (2:37).
