Well, since I brought up a 1980 single that didn't hit BILLBOARD's top 40 before in Rush "The Spirit Of Radio," let me try another one on for size. Is the 45 of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' "Here Comes My Girl" an edit of the LP, or is it the same? And if it is an edit, can it be replicated from the LP?

After further investigation, I do believe the 45 runs (3:52) (by comparison, the LP runs (4:25)). Still not able to figure out if it's an edit or a fade (could legitimately be either).

Doug, did you ever conclude whether the 45 was an early fade or an edit of the LP version?

I'm not Doug, but I'll accept the award on his behalf. ;) It's just an early fade. My DJ 45 states (3:52) but the actual run time is (4:00).

Using the track from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' Greatest Hits, fade for 16.025 seconds from 3:44.598 to 4:00.623. Slow down the resulting file by .38 second to 4:00.662.

My stock copy runs an actual 4:02. Using the original MCA CD of Torpedoes, the CD runs less than 0.1% slower, which is unnoticeable.
