My commercial 45, confirmed as Bang! 545, has a listed time of (2:53), an actual time of (2:55), and contains the "laughin' and runnin'" lyric. I only post this info because current database CDs with this lyric also included, run longer, between (2:59) and (3:02).

Interesting, I never knew that version was ever out on (at least a commercial) 45. Mine (also Bang! 545) has the "makin' love in the green grass" lyrics, as has every copy of that single I've ever run across. Indeed, I never heard the "clean" version until the late 70s (though I was vaguely aware that one existed).

Steve, just to make 100% sure for you, I just quickly re-checked both of my original 1967 45s, including one copy with a "DJ Copy" stamp on it, and both do, in fact, include the "laughin' and runnin'" lyric on them. My deadwax info is exactly the same, "W10127", for both copies. What is your 45's deadwax info?

Well, the plot gets thicker because mine also has W10127 in the deadwax, there is an LW there too. Just to make sure, I listened to it and verified that it has the "makin' love in the green grass behind the stadium" lyrics in the last verse.

I guess I need further clarificaion here. I assumed as soon as I heard the "laughin' and runnin'" lyric, :26 into the song, that there was the determination. But upon just listening all the way through, I DO also hear the "makin' love in the green grass" lyric, later in the song, at the 2:17 mark. Steve, thanks for the tipoff that the "lyric difference issue" is apparently near the end of the song; I had never known that before. What, was there a 2nd instance of the "laughin' and runnin" lyric, inserted later in the song, that replaced the "makin' love in the green grass" lyric released somewhere? And if so, was it on a stock and/or promo 45 or LP? Help!

Yes, "laughing & running, hey hey" replaced "making love in the green grass" on the edit. An mp3 of this version is on it's way to you.
I have this version on a Mercury "best of" album, circa 1990. It's in mono on the LP.

Many thanks for the file, Steve. When you say "it's mono on the LP", does that mean the version you just sent me was the same one that appeared on the original, Jan. 1967 "Blowin' Your Mind!" LP? I also know that Bang "re-packaged" their stuff from "since-departed-from-the-label" artists more than just about anyone else did. Or, could this version possibly have first seen the light of day on one of those "re-hashed" Bang LPs, since Pat doesn't denote "LP version" in the database for it. Any insight would be appreciated.

The censored version did appear on some mono pressings of the LP, and i believe may have been rechanneled on some stereo pressings, as i have heard the track off of a local custom radio station CD from WARX (former oldies station from Frederick, MD) that was the censored version, rechanneled...yet when the actual station would play the song it was always the stereo uncensored version.

I've been living with a copy of this song from The Wonder Years, thinking that it was just a bad sounding recording. I just downloaded a copy from iTunes, and it's incredible how much better it sounds! Another thing I noticed about the Wonder Years copy (aside from the fact that it sounds like garbage) is that it runs at a slower speed.

Aaron, the best sounding version I have by far comes from the 1991 CD
"Bang Masters". It's an excellent sounding recording.

John asked me to compare his replicated edit with the original "makin' love" 45 for timing purposes, and I found a discrepancy with Jim's original timing findings.
I have two copies of Bang 545 (no exclamation marks, though... they must've used a silencer):
* A 1967 pressing from Plastic Products
* A February, 1972 reserviced copy pressed by Specialty, with a hand-stamped "DJ COPY" on the "Goodbye Baby" side (which appears to be similar to what Jim indicated earlier.) The title font is MUCH larger on the '72 reservice, and its B-side title is simply "Goodbye Baby" as opposed to the '67 copy's "Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye)."
Other than the Specialty logo appearing in the '72 run-out, all other deadwax info matches perfectly: "W10127" and "LW", both in identical handwriting and in the same positions. These two copies were pressed from the same master stamper.
And the timings are identical, too: (3:00.7). The record appears to fade out at 2:58, but it actually continues at a barely-audible level for another 2.7 seconds. At Jim's reported 2:55 fadeout point, these two were still "makin' love in the green grass," as it were.
I assume the printed times would both be (2:53), but my '67 copy has the B-side label on both sides.

My findings agree with John in terms of the length. The song appears to be finished around 2:58, but listening carefully in headphones, I can hear faint audio all the way to the 3:01 mark, at which point it abruptly stops. Without a clean copy of the 45, though, you'd never hear this final audio.
