My 1969 commercial 45, which is stereo and confirmed as RCA 0161, has a listed time of (2:43), but an actual time of (2:40). Current database timings for its "original recording" CD appearances range from (2:40) to (2:50).

i agree jim, my vinyl 45 also runs 2:40....if you fade the
2:49 running version for 0:09 from 2:31 to 2:40 you can
effectively re-create the proper vinyl 45
version......pat..the db note needs to be updated as the
db states the 45's run time is 2:44....

Could the 2:44 run time come from the earlier RCA 45 from
June 1968, RCA Victor 47-9544 ? I see it is mono and has a
different matrix number than the May 1969 pressing, RCA
Victor 74-0161, which is stereo.

[edited] for those of you liking oddities, I have a version of this song that is
mixed different from the standard stereo version. It is from a 1989 UK CD
on Teledisc titled "Our Generation" (shown in Discogs). Most interesting is
that the vocal "wooah, woah woah woahs" starting at 1:11 is single tracked,
whereas in the normal version it is double-tracked. I wonder if the European
version was different, or if it was remixed for this CD.

Yes, my running time of (2:44) was the running time of RCA 9544. I will make note of the two different releases and their different running times in the database.

I don't know if the version on "Our Generation" to which davidclark refers is the same one as appears on the UK TRAX release "Sixties Vol 3 Baby Boomer Classics" BBCD1005 but it is definitely different than the US popular release. It is a different mix and sounds like a different take. Actual time is 2:30 and is in stereo.

I believe I can answer my own question. Someone sent me the song from the
new "The RCA Albums Collection" box set. The "dumped second voice &
remixed" version is from his 1971 LP "Aerial Pandemonium Ballet".   It's the
same version I have on the UK CD all these years.

Pat, the mono version of this onThe RCA Albums Collection contains echo on
his lead vocal. Is that the original 45?

I have an original yellow-label promo 45 from the first issue and it does indeed have echo on his vocal.
