Hey Folks:

There was a CD promo single we aired at the station I was at in 1991. It removed all instances of the whistling, and faded quickly into the music five seconds to the post/vocal.

Has that version ever appeared anywhere else?

Cheers,
Jody Thornton

Why would they remove the whistling? That's one of the most memorable parts of the song and one of the main "hooks," in my opinion. (Kind of like removing the whistling from "Dock Of The Bay.")

I've never heard this version; however, the US promo CD contains an edit that removes about a minute and a half from the middle. I don't know how many edits there are or where they occur, but essentially it cuts out the bridge and guitar solo and probably one of the choruses.

Jody & Aaron, here are the details from the promo CD single we received in for the song back in 1991:

Scorpions-"Wind Of Change" (CDP 447)
1-(non-described, listed & actual 3:42 version)
2-(non-described, listed (5:10), actual (5:11) version)

Both of these tracks include all 3 of the most prominent "whistle solo" sequences (the first :20 seconds, around 1:00 in, and at the end). Jody, I believe your memory, and there certainly may have been a second promo CD single issued for it in 1991 that we did not receive, but I have personally never heard/heard of a "no-whistle-intro" version for it. Perhaps you were working at a radio station in Canada that received a different, Canadian promo CD single from the one that I own.

Jody, when you say "removed all instances," do you mean that even in the middle and at the end there was no whistling?

I'm sending it to you Aaron...lol! Yes, and it fades on a repeat of the chorus (three times). This was from a cassette dub of the CD single.

What a strange edit! I can't imagine this song without the whistling!

Thanks for sending that, Jody! That IS a strange edit! To my ears, the only unique audio is at the very beginning, where the whistling was removed from the mix. The remainder of the song is just edited to remove the whistling. I'd be curious to know the details of that promo CD.

In your experience, did Canadian stations tend to receive promo CDs that were pressed in Canada, or were they mostly US promos?

The CD singles were most pressed in Canada. We had a couple of imports, but not usually. In many cases though we played off of the label compilations, which I assume that you had in the US.

Mind you, most of our stock CD singles were imports, from you folks and across the pond. Pretty similar to the vinyl situation these days.

Hmmm, Gregory Cooper's 1998 book, "Collectible Compact Disc Price Guide 2" shows a U.S. promo CD single for "Wind of Change" on Mercury CDP 423 (And BTW, CDP 447 is NOT listed, so this book is definitely not complete!) Again, no versions or timings listed - but assuming the "423" no. is not in error, I can only assume that must be the promo w/ the "non-whistling" version(s). You may begin your on-line searching for this rarity now... :-)

I've already inquired about that CD from an online seller. It was most likely released to rock radio, as it has only the full-length album version.

Ironically, a friend of mine brought over a box of CD singles for me to thumb through, and I came across CDP 423. I can confirm, for certain, that this has the full-length album version. Listed time is 5:10; actual time is 5:13.

After 11 years, I finally managed to track down a CD source for the "no whistling" edit. It's on a promo CD single from Canada, which I do not have, with catalog number CDP 508. It's also on a Canadian Polygram V/A compilation, which I do have: Focus May '91 (CDP 512). This is one of those label-specific comps that Jody said were often sent to Canadian radio stations. The full track list is available on Discogs. Printed time on both Focus '91 and CDP 508 is 3:42 and is labeled "Edit." The actual time, though, is 3:56.

I reached out to the collector on Discogs who is the only person owning CDP 508, and he confirms it exactly matches Focus May '91 and also has an actual run time of 3:56.
