When this was a hit in mid-2002, Promo Only used at least two separate versions on its radio discs.

The Rhythm Radio (June 2002) and Rhythm Radio (July 2002) both used a (4:21) mix that appears to be the album version in the database.

The mix on the Mainstream Radio (August 2002) series runs only 3:28, apparently just an early fade. Also, this mix runs about 1% slower(!) than the other mix.

I suspect the second mix was a radio edit serviced to CHR radio once the record started crossing over - can anyone (Jim? Aaron? anyone?) confirm?

Man, I don't even remember this song. If I have it, I would probably only have it on the same discs you have, Eric.

Eric, my 2002 promo collection is very hit-and-miss, but, lucky for you, I do happen to own two different promo CD singles for this one. These details will hopefully assist you in sorting this one out:

Ashanti-"Happy" (DEFR 15581-2) (no listed times)
1-Radio Edit (actual time 4:00)
2-Instrumental (actual time 4:29)
3-(Call Out Research Hook)

Ashanti-"Happy" (DEFR 15639-2) (no listed times)
1-Mainstream Edit (actual time 3:28)
2-LP Version (actual time 4:29)
3-Instrumental (actual time 4:29)
4-(Call Out Research Hook)

Eric, I can't match up your (4:21) "Rhythm Radio" mix on either of my promos, but we weren't a "Rhythm Radio" Top 40 station, and as such it appears we were not serviced with that version. If you need me to shoot any of my promo versions out to your for your further song analysis. let me know. Unfortunately, I do not remember which version we happened to play on-air in back in 2002.

Thanks, guys! I suspect Promo Only used the LP version, maybe shaving a few seconds from the top/bottom.

As for the song itself, I hardly remember it either. (It uses the Gap Band "Outstanding" sample and has little discernable melody.) But Ashanti was huge for a few months there in '02, so the single got attention.

Thanks for the info, guys! As you are probably aware, around 2002, Def Jam started issuing several CD singles to CHR that had shorter "Mainstream Edits" or "Pop Edits" on them. I have a few Jay-Z promo CDs, for instance, that were issued to Urban radio stations initially (most times containing a "Radio Edit") and a 2nd-issued single with a shorter "Mainstream Edit."

That explains a lot - I seem to recall a few cuts where Promo Only's mainstream issue mixes were a lot shorter than the earlier urban versions --"Down A$$ Chick" and some Ja Rule and Jay-Z singles come to mind.
