my commercial 45 issued as arista 9720 lists a run time of 4:19 but actually runs 4:21 and is an edit of the full length 5:20 cd/lp version.......this 45 run time info s/b added to the db.....it may also be remixed because it says produced by "jellybean for jellybean productions"......can anyone confirm this for me....i found the proper 45 version on the german import cd single issued as arista 661-516 and is listed as the "single version"

Hi Ed, the single version is not remixed, just edited. Jellybean was the original producer of the track.

The remixes were in charge of Ric Wake along with Richie Jones. There was no remix/edit released.

For a domestic release of the single version, check the promo CD ASCD-9721.

Does anybody know the edit points to take the album version down to the single version?

O.K., found a video on YouTube of somebody playing the original 45, and used it for my template. It's a whole bunch of little bitty, annoying cuts. Somebody had WAY too much time with a razor blade to come up with this one!

Starting from the beginning of the album version and working your way in to your edit:

0:01 to 0:05
0:07 to 0:11
1:09 to 1:17
1:15 to 1:23
1:17 to 1:21
3:40 to 3:57
3:55 to 4:11
4:04 to 4:12

*whew!* Hope this helps somebody!

This one is a bear...

8 edits. This is what I came up with, from the physical cd version of
"Whitney"...

Delete 0:03.020 to 0:07.020 of the LP version
Delete 0:11.213 to 0:15.210 of the LP version.
Delete 1:15.440 to 1:23.377 of the LP version.
Delete 1:31.267 to 1:39.229 of the LP version.
Delete 1:41.200 to 1:45.170 of the LP version.
Delete 4:16.645 to 4:24.628 of the LP version.
Delete 4:32.618 to 4:48.595 of the LP version.
Delete 4:56.428 to 5:04.385 of the LP version.

The reason there are so many edits is because the chorus on the 45 goes in
a different order later in the song than it does on the LP. On the 45, it goes
in this order toward the end of the song:

When you're feeling down and out, etc., love will save the day... then
When your world's falling apart, etc., love will save the day... then
When you're feeling full of doubt, etc., love will save the day... then
When the nights are in your heart (is this really what she says?), etc., love
will save the day.

During the first full chorus on the 45, as well as the LP version, the "falling
apart" and "full of doubt" lines are switched. "Full of doubt" comes first.
No idea why they switch them for the last chorus of the 45 (especially when
they didn't switch them earlier in the 45) but it means you have a number of
quick edits as you try to arrange the lines in the correct order, also trying to
match the correct ad libs.

Each line is repeated twice in the final chorus of the song on the LP version
(which begins about 4:09 of the LP version and 3:41 of the 45 version).
So what you end up doing is:

Keep "When you're feeling down and out, etc., love will save the day" from
the first loop and then make an 8-second edit to cut out the first "full of
doubt" line.

Then keep the first "When your world's falling apart, etc., love will save the
day" and then make a 16-second edit to get back around to the second "full
of doubt" line.

Then keep that second "When you're feeling full of doubt, etc., love will
save the day" and then make an 8-second edit to cut out the second
"falling apart" line and get to that second "When the nights" line.

... and the ad libs match

My edits are a little bit different than Night Aire's above and that's giving me
some concern, but if I'm missing something, I'm not hearing it. For
example, I have the first edit at 0:03.020, not 0:01. I think you need to
capture those first 4 guitar notes between 0:01 and 0:03 of the LP version
for the 45. They sound different to me than the guitar notes between 0:05
and 0:07 of the LP version, which sound a little more "flat."

Also, if you make the 16 second edit the 6th edit (as opposed to the 7th),
then you have the lines of the chorus in the wrong order, I think.

Let me know if you think I'm off here.

Maybe a little OT, but there are 2 extended Wake/Jones
remixes of this track-the one that is widely available and
runs 7:59 and one on an import vinyl that runs 7:00. The
shorter version is VERY similar to the longer one but the
longer one cannot be edited to create the shorter one-so if
you're a completist, you need both. As far as I know, the
shorter one is not available on cd at all.
