Hey Pat,
as I was going through the database, I noticed you had a listing for "Nobody Wants to be Lonely" on Ricky's "Loaded" CD, and have the note that it was released as by Ricky Martin and Christina Aguilera. However, the album version does not feature Christina Aguilera. It's Ricky solo. When the song was rerecorded as a duet, for a short time, the CD was sold with a separate CD single featuring the duet, which only clocked in at 4:11.

Good catch, budaniel. And just to elaborate on your remarks... If a consumer had tried to seek out a copy of the "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely" CD single featuring Christina Aguilera at his/her local music store in the singles bins, he/she probably wouldn't have been able to find one because the CD single was never made available as an individual unit. The only (legal) way to acquire the CD single was to purchase Martin's Sound Loaded (Columbia 61394) CD, which for a limited time had the single clumsily attached to the case with a rubber band as a "bonus". So if you were one of the many folks who had already bought the album prior to the song's release, you would have had to purchase the album all over again in order to have the hit version of the song. A dubious marketing practice to be sure... not to mention it prevented "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely" from reaching the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 because the bonus CD single was ineligible to be figured in as sales points toward the song's chart performance.

I believe, after a while anyway, that Target was selling the single individually. Or maybe they were giving them away. That's how I got mine, 'cause I never bought the Sound Loaded album. Not 100% sure it was at Target, but it was a big chain like that. I remember thinking, "Hmm, are they supposed to be selling this individually?"

Brian,
maybe you got the import CD single from one of the big stores? The duet
version was released in a slimline in other countries. That's how I got my
copy (also have the vinyl promo 12" with the club mixes).

Brian:
When you purchased your CD single copy of "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely" individually, what probably happened is Target (or whatever store you purchased the single from) opened all their limited edition copies of Ricky Martin's Sound Loaded CD albums; removed the accompanying "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely" CD singles; sold the singles separately in the singles bins; and then went back and resealed the CD albums. Sony explicitly prohibited individual sale of the CD single and chances are, if you look at your copy, it probably doesn't have a bar code and/or it may state something on the package to the effect of "not to be sold for individual sale". Nonetheless, I recall seeing a couple of stores selling the singles individually anyway.

In case anyone is still looking for the 45 version with Christina it is
finally (over a decade later) on Ricky's recent Playlist CD release.

Ed this entry was entered in the database on October 24, 2012. I see your subscription expired on 2/2/12 so that explains why you do not see it listed in the database.

The duet version of "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely" is also
featured on the Ricky Martin compilations The Best of
Ricky Martin (2001) and 17 (2008, this
compilation also features the Spanish-language version
of "Livin' la Vida Loca" as opposed to the English one).
