The database currently says "remix" next to a couple CDs with "Girlfriend." Specifically, this is "The Neptunes Remix" from the US CD single. My old top 40 station started out playing the regular "Radio Edit" when the song first came out. Several weeks later when the remix was released, we switched to that version through the end of its chart run.
If nothing else, it should probably be noted that "The Neptunes Remix" is a DJ version.

I'm trying to remember... Does the "Neptunes Remix" features rapper Nelly while the original "Radio Edit" does not?

Exactly right, Todd. The backing tracks for both versions are similar, although the Neptunes Remix has a little more thump to it. Nelly is not on the original version.

2002 is WAY past my "promo CD single prime", but somehow I do still happen to own two different promos for "Girlfriend", and here are the details:
*NSYNC-"Girlfriend" (JDJ-40008-2)
1-(The Neptunes Remix Featuring Nelly) (listed 4:43; actual 4:44)
*NSYNC-"Girlfriend" (JDJ-42960-2)
1-Radio Edit (listed & actual 3:58)
2-Album Version (listed & actual 4:13)
3-Instrumental (listed & actual 4:11)
4-(callout hook)
5-(callout hook)
Always crossin' my fingers that some of our "younger radio vets" can help Pat/all of us out with some of these newer queries, as we all know there is an absolute avalanche of open questions/still-undocumented promo version details for many, many of these more recent hits.
