The US 7" single for "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" has a printed time of 3:29. There is an import compilation that has a 3:10 version (labeled "Edit"). Does anyone know if they are the same version? I don't own the 45 to verify whether or not the 3:29 printed time is correct.

I've seen pictures online of a UK EP single. This song is listed as the first track and is labeled as the 'single version' with a listed time of 4:03.

My US 45 of this song (I.R.S. 53220) has a listed time of 3:27, and times out
to 3:29. The second and third verses and half of the fourth verse
are edited out. The UK CD single I have has the LP version, with two different
"B-sides" than the US 45. This UK CD single (I.R.S. DIRMT 180) is listed as
part of a series, as the bottom of the front cover lists it as Volume One. I've
never seen a 3:10 version before; what compilation is it?

It's called "Singles Collected," an import from 1994. It's possible that the "Edit" on this disc is something unique to the CD. I've never owned this one or heard it from 7". Paul, is there any way you could email me a dub of your 45? I'd love to see if it can be re-created from the LP version.

Thanks to Paul, I was able to hear the US 45 edit. It's actually one simple edit removing the section from 0:21 to 0:44, with the edit right before the word "height" at the beginning point and before the word "you" at the end edit point. Then, just chop off everything from 3:27 to the end and create a 10 second fade. The last lyrics heard are "...as we know it, and I..."
By the way, this is a totally different edit than what's on "Singles Collected." Now, I just need to locate my copy of "Eponymous" to actually re-create it :)

The version that's on the "Greenpeace: Rainbow Warriors" compilation runs 2:59, ending right before the a cappella section. But instead of doing a quick fade on the false ending to turn it into a real ending, they started fading it at 2:45.

The 3:30 Edit on the 1988 promo CD single (CD45-17476) cuts at one word further ahead on each side of the 0:21 edit point, so it goes "fear of height, down, height / vitriolic, patriotic". The fade goes on just long enough to barely hear the whole "and I feel fiiiiine".
So we can maybe think of that one as a "failed attempt to recreate the 45 edit".
(Lyric sites say it's "fear of height", not "fear, fight".)

The commercial 45 (but not the "Edit" from the promo CD single) is one easy edit and an early fade. Here are editing instructions using the timing from the superb R.E.M. best-of Eponymous (1988):
Segment 1
Ends on a snare hit
If the first bass drum hit in the song is beat number 1, then the edit is on beat number 64.
Extends from 0:00 to 0:21.2 of the LP version and the 45 edit.
Delete the 80 beats from 0:21.2 to 0:44.6 of the LP version.
Segment 2
Begins on a snare hit
Extends from 0:21.2 to 3:27.7 of the 45 edit.
Extends from 0:44.6 to 3:51.0 of the LP version.
Fade
Extends from 3:18 to 3:27.7 of the 45 edit.
Extends from 3:41 to 3:51.0 of the LP version.
Your mixdown will run 3:27.7 with an edit at 0:21.2 and a 10-second fade from 3:18 to 3:27.7.

I just pulled out my promo CD, and by golly, it's a different edit from the commercial 45 dub I have on my hard drive. As reported by mjb50, the edit point is after the word "height" at the 0:21 mark. To recap:

Yes, that's correct, and my edit was matched up to Paul's 45. I have a different 45 dub on my hard drive from Chuck, and the edit is the same. It's the promo CD single that's has the edit in a different spot.

Aaron - Do you know where the edit is on the promo CD single? On snare or downbeat? Two or three beats after where the promo CD is edited?
I wonder which came first and why it was changed. It's not like the lyrics make perfect sense for one edit but not the other.

As a result, the commercial 45 and the promo CD single "Edit" differ in exactly one word.
On the snare hit at 0:21, the commercial 45 has the word "high" and the promo CD single has the word "you". Everything else is the same.
The fades are basically in the same spots in the commercial 45 and the promo CD single "Edit".
