Thought I had asked this in an earlier thread, but danged if I can find it.
Anyone know the difference between the "edit of the LP version in an unsuccessful attempt to create the 45" and the actual 45 version?

The single came out first.
Then for the album they extended the song by going back to the multi track and added a horn section to the middle and some other pieces. So they spliced that all IN, but they did all of this with a fresh mixdown from the multi tracks. When they mixed the LP version they did not keep the handclaps during the first verse that appeared on the single which makes the original single unique.
Enter the CD age. The single master had some phase issues if you listened in mono and some distortion on the end, so somebody decided that since the LP version sounded cleaner, to edit out the parts that were edited in for a new single master. That's what's on most CDs and I believe all Rhino releases of the short version. Problem is, with all of this editing in and out, on the LP edit, about two thirds of the way into the song after KC sings the word "baby" there is a rather audible splice.
The actual 45 version is on at least one CD.

Great info, Bill! Thanks for the tip about the phase issues, which I have just corrected.

Does anyone know if the Rhino Digital 45 of "Get Down Tonight" is the correct 45 version or the unsuccessful edit of the LP version that has been released over and over again?

Judging from it's length, I'd say it's not the 45 version.

In addition to the differences already noted, the woodblock is much more prominent on the actual 45 version. The LP version and the "edit of the LP version in an unsuccessful attempt to create the 45" have the woodblock mixed much lower, with a lot of reverb on it, while it sounds "dry" (to these ears, at least) on the 45.

Any idea which one that is? If I don't have it, I may just
have to do a needledrop.

There are several listed in the database containing the 45 version. Unfortunately, they all run 4-5 seconds shorter than the actual 45.

Unfortunately, I no longer have a subscription to the
database. It's been over six months, so I think I may be
eligible again soon.
