TM Century released a "short radio edit" of "One Moment In Time" that runs 3:24. Is this, perhaps, a custom edit, or was an official promo released with a shorter version?

Aaron, we never received in, nor have I ever seen a promo CD single for this song - we played it on-air off the 1988 Summer Olympics CD. I do own a promo 45 for it, and it includes the exact same listed (4:42), actual (4:43) version on both sides. It appears that TM Century exercised wonderful judgement back then by creating a custom short radio edit. And although I'm a huge fan of the Olympics, that may just be my personal least favorite Top 10 hit of the entire decade! I normally try to avoid editorializing (after all, who cares?), but it was just so painful for me to hear it again, while timing the 45 for Aaron, that I just had to vent. There, I feel better now! :)

Ha! Agreed on all points. Thanks for the additional details, Jim!

I had the opposite reaction. It's one of my favorite top 10 hits of the '80s. And I'm not a huge fan of the Olympics. And it's written by two of the most successful songwriters of the '70s/'80s - Albert Hammond & John Bettis. (Guess I had to express my feelings, too! :)

And someone has to stick up for the Clive Davis Arista big schmaltzy power ballad!

We probably agree on a lot of other top 40 hits, but this isn't one of them, evidently.

When I heard this song the first couple of times upon its release, I thought it sounded like a huge hit in the realm of "Greatest Love Of All". But for some reason, it didn't wear well during its chart run, resulting in a Top 10 but nowhere near the heights of her biggest hits. Possibly just too over-the-top in its production or a bit of Whitney burnout at that particular time.

On a more objective note, I misplaced my 45 long ago, but the opening note on the CD version sounds slightly truncated. Does the CD match the 45 intro?

I think that was the whole point. The song was representing the Olympics, athletes that have a larger than life ability in their field. And the song was supposed to be larger than life, as well; thus the dramatic bombastic production and even Whitney's vocal gets bombastic.
