According to the database, the original CD pressings of Patsy Cline's 12 Greatest Hits with her Top 40 hits in mono and the remastered pressings with the hits in stereo both show a catalog number of MCA 12. I'm looking to pick up a copy of the former, but is there any way to tell for certain which pressing is which?

I don't have my copies handy to check, but the remastered version
from 2003 has a green cover with a picture of Patsy in a gold dress in
the middle (it replicates the original LP cover). The old mono cd has a
picture of Patsy in western attire.

There was also a gold disc version but I don't recall the cover of that
one.

Also note that the remaster features remixes of all songs except "Back
in Baby's Arms.". The remixes were done by Bob Ludwig and are
quite faithful to the originals.

Right. This should be the mono CD, Todd:

And don't forget to check your local library for these things. I recently found the old MFSL Gold CD of Simon & Garfunkel's "Bookends" album at my local library. You never know what out-of-print CDs you're going to find there.

Thanks for the info, Roscoe and Brian. However, do all pressings of the 12 Greatest Hits CD with Cline wearing the western attire (as shown in Brian's post) run in mono? I ask because I've listened to audio clip samples of tracks supposedly from that CD on Amazon and All Music Guide, but they're in stereo.

It also strikes me as odd that the Greatest Hits CD with the green cover shares the same catalog number as the aforementioned 12 Greatest Hits disc, yet each contains a different track listing.

Just note that this CD does NOT contain the hit version of "Walking
After Midnight," which was on a different label.

Actually, my copy of the old mono CD does contain the original hit
version of "Walking After Midnight". The remaster uses the stereo
remake as did the LP version of 12 Greatest Hits.

I double-checked, and I was mistaken, Paul. The mono "Greatest Hits" CD does have the hit version of "Walkin' After Midnight." Thanks for pointing that out, Roscoe.

Thanks, guys. But what I'm mainly wanting to be certain of is that the 12 Greatest Hits CD as pictured above has always contained the mono mixes and wasn't later remastered and reissued using the stereo mixes as substitutes. The sample audio clips I've listened from this CD on Amazon and All Music Guide all appear to be in stereo which is only adding to my confusion. Should I assume Amazon and AMG have uploaded the wrong audio samples and just go ahead and buy the disc expecting to get the mono mixes? (I already have the stereo mixes on CD, by the way.)

I understand your question now but, unfortunately, don't have any info on whether there was a "secret" remaster of the older CD version of 12 Greatest Hits that substituted stereo versions. I suspect that it's just a mistake on Amazon and AMG, but likely there's no way to find out without purchasing. I did pull out my copy (which was purchased about 4 years ago from an Amazon seller), but there's nothing distinguishing about the matrix number (MCAD-12) on either the cover or the disc itself.

One thing I never noticed, though, is that "Faded Love" is stereo on this disc while everything else is mono. Since they obviously did not use the original LP tape to create this disc, I suspect that they pulled whatever individual song masters or transfers were handy.

Another option for you, if you are looking for mono versions, are the old CD releases of 2 of the studio albums released during Cline's lifetime: Showcase (MCAD-87) and Sentimentally Yours (MCAD-90). Those discs are both mono and contain several of Cline's big hits ("Crazy", "I Fall To Pieces", "She's Got You") and many of the same mid-charters that are found on 12 Greatest Hits.

Yeah, Faded Love is stereo on my copy, too.

Well, there are no samples for the 1988 US pressing on Amazon. The only ones that have sound samples with that cover art are the ones that say "Import," "Eco Packaging," and "Gold CD." Those may not be the right versions. If you order a used copy of the 1988 CD (link below), you should be safe. You can get one for 49 cents:

Hi all,

Sorry if this adds any confusion to the search... but MY copy of the CD pictured above is in STEREO, entirely.
It is the 1988 MCAD-12 issue, with the photo shown above.
(this of course was fine with me since stereo is what i wanted).
But those wanting the *mono* issue, beware, obviously can't just go by the cover art above, or year, or catalog#.

Since there may be no other way to differentiate this pressing, the #'s on the inner ring are:
MCAD12 S8A14A

Hope this helps. Just FYI.

Crap, that's what I was afraid of, MM.

And wouldn't you know that I went ahead and ordered a factory sealed copy earlier today from an eBay seller who informs me his copy is a 1988 U.S. pressing in a standard jewel case, but of course there will be no way to tell what's on the inner CD ring until I tear off the plastic shrink wrap. Unless there's some way to differentiate the mono and stereo CD pressings from the outer packaging, I guess I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope the disc contains the mono mixes I'm looking for.

You want MCAD 12 R with the LP cover art. It was mastered by Bob Ludwig and all Stereo. And a superb sounding CD. The older one is mono but this was pulled and some Stereo tracks are on that secret remaster. Record club copies of MCAD 12 are mono and the original Owen Bradley approved CD.

I believe he's seeking the old mono MCAD 12, not the Bob Ludwig remaster. But you're right, it appears that the record club version of the old CD contains what he's looking for. I didn't notice that before, but on the actual disc is a "CRC" designation. That version should contain the following:
- Original mono hit version of "Walkin' After Midnight"
- Stereo mix of "Faded Love"
- Mono mixes of all other tracks

The Ultimate Master Disc version is a gold remaster by Glenn Meadows, Milan Bogdan, Jim Loyd and Benny Quinn. The disc, MCAD-10952, bears a 1993 copyright notice and all tracks are stereo, including the newer version of Walkin' After Midnight. Sounds quite nice!

Was the '80s CD of "Showcase" also subject to a stealth remaster? I've read several reviews that refer to the CD as all stereo (and those reviews were of the single CD MCA reissue, not of the BGO twofer).

This reply is a bit off topic, but I didn't know there were two versions of "Walkin' After Midnight." Until today, I assumed there was only a single version.
In fact, they are two completely different recordings. I had always thought the version that appears on my Time-Life Legendary Country Singers disc was the only version.

I'm guessing there was a second recording made for crossover audiences?

I Googled it but didn't find any references immediately. Maybe there's a post here that discusses it?

Patsy re-recorded her earliest hit for the DECCA label
in 1961. The original 1956 recording was issued on the
smaller 4-Star label.

The original "Walkin' After Midnight" was recorded for
Four Star, but leased to and issued on Decca. The track
was re-recorded for Decca proper in 1961 due to Stereo.
And in her newer style. Before Patsy Cline signed to
Decca
Records proper in 1961, she recorded for Four Star, and
was forced to record only their material. When she
signed
to Four Star in the 1950's, Decca leased those
recordings
and recorded them for Four Star and issued them on
Decca
before her contract ran out with Four Star.

To get the original MCAD 12 mostly mono Greatest Hits,
the BMG Music Service or Columbia House CD versions are
most likely to have this disc pre secret remasters.
Because MCAD 12 was secret remastered a year or two
later on, and more Stereo tracks replacing mono.

The simplest/surefire way to buy the mono (except for Faded Love) 12 Greatest Hits is to pick up a copy of The Commemorative Collection. It's a 2CD set. The mostly mono 12 Greatest Hits makes up the bulk of the first disc.

I have still yet to encounter the mono "Showcase" CD.
