I have a couple of questions regarding John Lennon and Plastic Ono Band's "Give Peace a Chance". The database shows the song on most CDs with the comment: (with countdown). Can this be taken to mean that the countdown was not included on vinyl 45 and LP pressings?

Also, does anyone recall if a shorter DJ edit or length of "Give Peace a Chance" was ever issued to Top 40 radio? Given that radio stations in the '60s seldom programmed songs running longer than 3:00, it seems unlikely to me that stations would've played the full 4:50 version... especially given how repetitive this particular song is!

The US commercial 45 does NOT contain the countdown.

As far as I know, there was no shorter version for radio.

Correct me if I am wrong but I don't believe the hit version of "Give Peace A Chance" appeared on a vinyl LP until 1975 with the release of the "Shaved Fish" LP. The single was recorded live in Montreal but the LP "Live Peace In Toronto" obviously contained a different version of the song so I don't believe that I can say there ever was an LP version of "Give Peace A Chance".

Thanks for the info, guys. So is it safe to assume then that no shortened DJ edit was ever issued either for the Plastic Ono Band's follow-up Top 40 hit "Cold Turkey", which runs approximately 5:00 on all CD copies to date?

My Apple 45 matches the fade found on "The John Lennon
Collection" EMI CD but the opening count-in is excised so
that the song starts right on the down-beat. Run time is
about 4:46 or so.

Does anyone know if the UK 45 contained the count-in? If it doesn't, then I'd
be curious as to when it first appeared... I had the "Shaved Fish" LP back in
the 70s, and of course was upset that the song was not in full, and I don't
recall the count-in being on that.

I don't believe there were any designated promo copies for Apple singles prior to 1970 or so.

I guess the statute of limitations is up by now, so it's safe to admit that I "might" have faded it a bit early once or twice. For
backtiming purposes only, you understand. :)

Allen J. Wiener states in The Beatles - The Ultimate
Recording Guide
, "The original single included John's
count-in, which was omitted on the U.S release...", which I
gather means that the UK 45 included the count-in.

After John says "four", somebody else says "four" and that
'four' overlaps the start of the music and is on the US 45.
