my commercial 45 for the tokens song "the lion sleeps
tonight" issued as rca victor 7954 states the run time on
the label as 2:35 and does indeed run that length......in
order to re-create the true vinyl 45 you'll need to fade
for 0:09 from 2:26 to 2:35 using the cd version from "all
time greatest hits".....this 45 run time info s/b added to
the db.....

The oldest CD I have with the track is Heartland Music's 2-CD Real Rock (1987). Seems to be a high-generation source tape here.

The next-oldest is the original pressing (no RE-1) of Time-Life's Rock 'N' Roll Era Vol. 4 1961 (1987). It sounds worse here than on Real Rock.

It sounds much better on Rhino's Billboard Top R&R Hits 1961 (1988), where it's only on the 1988 release of this CD. (On the 1993 reissue, the song was replaced with "Goodbye Cruel World".) The same analog transfer is used on:
  • Time-Life's RE-1 reissue of Rock 'N' Roll Era Vol. 4 1961 (copyright 1987, release date ?)
  • Time-Life's 25 Years Of #1 Hits (1991)
  • Time-Life JCI pressing of Rock 'N' Roll Era Vol. 4 1961 (1993)
  • Rhino's Animal Planet Presents Sing With The Animals (1998)
The mastering history gets a little fuzzy at this point, but I can generalize a bit.

The versions on RCA's Nipper's Greatest Hits The '60s Vol. 1 (original 1988 release) and RCA's Nipper's #1 Hits 1956-1986 (1989) hasten the tail of the fade by three or four beats compared to others. Ace UK's Radio Gold Vol. 3 (1995) also has a slightly shortened fade.

There's a rerecording on the promo-only disc Spotlight On Hits Pop Vol. 22 (1994). I don't know where this came from.

The best-sounding versions that I've heard (likely from the lowest-generation tape source), are on Time-Life's 2-CD Glory Days Of Rock 'N' Roll Vol. 1 Doo-Wop (1999) and Time-Life's 2-CD Rock And Roll The Legendary Years 1959-1961 (2004). I think these may use a lower-generation tape source than the Rhino disc.

The song has been "remade" a few times. The 1970 "Both Sides Now" LP
contains a reworking of the song, retaining certain aspects (the vocals) but
changing others (the instrumentation) - it's actually not bad and was the
version I first became familiar with way back in 1973 on a compilation LP
"Party Rock"...I think. I've also heard other versions that are obvious
rerecordings (which we collectors tend to completely disregard).
