Coming in September. To me, this is Record Research's most exciting book in a long, long time. I always love to see what other charts besides Billboard had to say:

Yeah Brian, we're working hard on this book right now!
There's lots of very interesting stuff in this book. Many songs that reached #1 in Music Vendor/Record World (CCR has 3 alone) that never made it to #1 in Billboard. Not to mention the tons of songs and artists that never made the Hot 100 and/or Bubbling Under.

One thing I noticed when looking at the preview page on the Record Research site was that The Diamonds' "The Stroll" hit #1 in Music Vendor. That's especially interesting, since it also hit #1 in Cash Box.
I know a lot of people feel that Billboard should be the one-and-only chart reference, but the fact is that all music charts prior to SoundScan were simply surveys, polls of record stores, just like a political poll, and each with its own methodology.
A look at the current presidential race has some polls showing one candidate slightly ahead, some with another slightly ahead, and then you'll get one or two that show a great difference between the two, with no proof of which one is the most accurate. And history has shown that the largest sample size is NOT necessarily the most accurate.
That is the same methodology used in all pre-Soundscan charts, including Billboard. So I think other music publications of the day are well worth a look.

Count me in. I've wondered for years about Record World's charts. Thanks to everyone at Record Research for taking the time to explore this.
Now, if only they'd put together a book for Radio & Records & possibly an update to Pat's excellent Cash Box book.

Now that the book is really starting to come together, there's alot of interesting stuff. Besides those titles that made #1 in RW and not #1 in BB (and vice-versa), here's a few other differences that jumped out at me:
Hello Old Friend - Eric Clapton (#24 BB/#56 RW)
Shaddap You Face - Joe Dolce (#53 BB/#24 RW)
You Thrill Me - Exile (#40 BB/#69 RW)
Mother - John Lennon (#43 BB/#16 RW)
N.Y., You Got Me Dancing - Andrea True (#27 BB/#95 RW)
There's TONS more, but you get the picture.
Hope everybody here orders at least one copy!

I know the charts weren't as accurate back then as they are now, but don't you think they were pretty close? When you look at Billboard, Cashbox and Record World, usually it was the same records at or near the top on each magazine's chart. Sure, each had some songs ranked noticably differently from time to time, but when you look at the singles that sold the most (i.e. gold and platinum), usually they were the ones that hit the top 10.
If it were possible I'd love to see charts from the past using today's Soundscan capabilities to see how they would differ, but I'm quite happy going with what we've got. Even with weird rules Billboard had for songs not falling down the chart if they had a bullet the previous week, I don't think they were that far off.

Is there any chance of Record Research putting out a book based on the Radio and Records charts, if the Record World book is a success.

The Hit Records books were shipped to our offices yesterday! If you pre-ordered, you should be getting yours in the next week or two. I might also mention that we're doing a "follow-up" volume featuring the records that peaked on the Music Vendor/Record World #101-150 ("Bubbling Under") charts, but did not hit the Billboard Hot 100 or Bubbling Under charts. That's about 4,500 titles exclusive to that chart! Tons of obscure stuff in there. Check out our website for more details...

I did pre-order. I'm excited to get it. Though I will say I think it's a mistake for the follow-up volume to only include songs that didn't chart in Billboard. I'm not sure if I'll buy it now. I feel like it's not complete.

I noticed on the back cover it reads:
• Very early pop classics such as Frank Sinatra's "Five Minutes More"
and Guy Lombardo's "Easter Parade" charting decades after their
original popularity.
I don't see the Sinatra song listed in the book tho.

That's a mis-print. "Five Minutes More" will be in the new #101-150 book.
