Anyone know where I can find old Gavin Report airplay charts online? I know Rolling Stone used to publish Gavin Report in the 1980s, I think, but not really sure when they started or what other publications listed it. I believe The Gavin Report was started in 1958 and ran for many, many years. I'd really like to get a hold of the pre-1974 charts, since Radio & Records was founded in late 1973, and all those charts are online.

Curiously, were the Gavin charts ever considered to be in the league of Billboard or R&R? I've heard all these stories about how influential Bill Gavin was in the music industry, but at any time in my career they seemed to be one of those charts that wasn't particularly choosy about who they accepted as reporters and thusly were populated with lots of stations in not-very-important markets.

For most of its years the Gavin Report was a rather cheesy-looking stapled-together pamphlet-like mail out. Just blue ink on white paper as I recall. In order to become a Gavin reporter you pretty much just needed a transmitter...which was great for small market stations looking for record service. Although, the major market stations also reported, so it was handy to see what they were playing, even if they were sometimes only 'paper' adds. But, no, not in the league of Billboard or R&R.

Now that we've covered the history of the Radio & Records
Top 40 charts, I'd LOVE to do a complete (or even partial)
history on the Gavin Report. The problem is, nobody seems
to have the old issues. We have every issue starting with
March 27, 1981. If you guys know of ANYBODY with ANY
issues prior to that, please let me know! Doesn't even
have to be the full issue, just a copy of the Top 40 chart
would be sufficient.

American Radio History has a listing of the Gavin charts.

Bill Gavin lined up music weekly for The Lucky Lager Dance Time radio program circa 1955 until that program folded later in the 50s. Does anybody know any of these music program sheets logs cues can be found?

Yes, but only one lone issue prior to March 27, 1981.

Thanks to Kerry Jackson, we have now tracked down about
120 issues from the 1970s (including all but one issue
from 1976). At first glance, I'm noticing a lot of
agreement, but also some major differences with the Radio
& Records charts from the same period. Come on, I know
there's GOT to be somebody with some more issues out there
somewhere!

Good news! We FINALLY found a near complete collection of The Gavin Report going all the way back to 1958!

Hopefully a new research project that will eventually be turned into another Record Research book in the near
future.

Paul - Have you ever seen any of the charts or playlists
Gavin did for the Lucky Lager Dance Time radio program?
This show ran circa 1954 - 1959 or so. The beer company
Lucky Lager supplied stations the music with mandatory to
mention charts and the copy for the beer ads. The station
would supply the DJ.

The entire program would run two to four hours daily. This
was a "sponsored" broadcast that meant revenue to cash
starved stations in need of programming. Budweiser and
Coke had similar programs the same era.

No, I've never seen any of those charts (believe me, I've
looked for them!).

Is there any place online that I can find the Gavin
charts from March 27, 1981 to August 17, 1984? The World
Radio History web page only has 3 charts from 1982 and
1983 and start back in at August 24th 1984.

Nope. Those issues/charts are in our private Record Research collection.
