this message is directed at Paul Haney of Record
Research, but anyone can answer if they know....
i own many of whitburns books and one which isn't
directly published by record research but nontheless
is the bible for top 40 guys like me....'the billboard
book of top 40 hits' issued now by billboard books.com
states that the period
it covers is from 1955 to present....BUT...there are a
few 1954 songs intermingled
in the data.....Paul, why are some songs that peaked in
1954 in the book....the three i found are 'the
naughty lady of shady lane' by the ames brothers, 'shake,
rattle & roll' by bill haley and 'runaround' by
the three chuckles....just wondering...

I think I can answer for Paul: they were still in the top 40 in January 1955, even though they peaked in 1954. In fact, "Naughty Lady of Shady Lane" was at #3 in the 1/1/55 issue. "Shake, Rattle & Roll" was #12. And "Runaround" was #27.

That explanation is correct. We wanted to account for all of the songs that were on the first chart(s) of 1955.
