After thirteen years since the second volume of this
series was released, it’s finally here. Volume three of
“The Lost 45s” of the 70s and 80s will be released this
summer and it was worth the wait. This time we have a
jam packed disc with twenty much sought after single
versions. Collectors will find many rare single edits
(like Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville” and Cliff
Richard’s “We Don’t Talk Anymore”) plus several unique 45
versions that differ from the LP version (like Pat
Benatar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” “Every Little
Thing She Does Is Magic” by Police and Eruption’s remake
of “I Can’t Stand The Rain”). Some tracks make their US
CD debut (like “Anything You Want” by John Valenti and
“Don’t Hold Back” by Chanson). Hear every song like you
first heard it on the radio or on your turntable. You
won’t get the same tired songs you get on other
compilations. Instead, we’ve hand picked hard to find
gems seldom heard, but not forgotten, by Stallion,
Player, Peter Wolf, Rick Springfield and Gerry Rafferty
just to name a few. Every track is the original hit
version and has been superbly mastered from the original
master tapes. With an eight page booklet, including
pictures plus extensive liner notes on each song and
artist, this is one disc you will want to add to your
collection and play over and over again.

OMG! Stallion AND John Valenti? I think I just died and went to heaven. I never thought either of those songs would see the light of day on CD. Thanks for the great news!

Did you also see the last line on the original post:
April Fools!
Too bad, it sounded like a terrific CD!

Well, the last line doesn't really indicate the post is an April Fools joke.
But I did see the April 1 date before reading the whole post, so I figured as much. Erie sure went to a lot of trouble compiling all that info for an April Fools joke.
It certainly did seem too good to be true.
Now, someone should contact Barry Scott and tell him to actually release this CD!! Sure, Varese Sarabande won't do it but maybe he can get another label to do it.
And Mark, Greg Guidry's "Goin' Down" IS available on CD - an out of print Japanese various-artist comp called "Very Best of AOR", which I happen to have, my friend :)

Wow. What an elaborate hoax. My mouth was watering when I read the
track listing. Guess Barry or someone else punked us.

I meant the last line of the original post (as it appeared on the BSN message board), it actually said:
April Fools!
Now, if that doesn't indicate it's a joke, then I don't know what does!

It wasn't Barry. I wrote Barry about this Aprils Fools post and suggested he actually pursue releasing such a CD. I gave him a link to this page, and here's his response:
<Wow. That was a cool list! I don’t have much time to contact any labels, but if you let them know—I can certainly work on this with them. Great track listing…it contained a few of the songs on my ‘most wanted’ list!>

Quick call Bill Buster. Maybe between Bill and Barry they can convince
someone at Universal to open their vault(s) and make this a true
release.

Good luck convincing Bill Buster of that. From the above list, I can tell you I've already tried to convince him to release Stallion and the Police single mix of "Every Little Thing..." on CD (along with some other suggestions) and he shot every song down - including Al Wilson's #3 R&B/#27 pop hit "I've Got a Feeling" and Irene Cara's Top 20 hit "Out Here On My Own" - the version with full orchestra. He told me there was virtually no interest. He even went to YouTube to check on "Out Here On My Own" views. The number was over 1.3 million views. He said that just doesn't indicate there's enough interest in the song, to him. This really surprised me because he recently reissued Five Flights Up "Do What You Wanna Do" (which had 20,000 YouTube views) and Avante-Garde's "Naturally Stoned" (which had 20,000 YouTube views). So I thought the 1.3 million YouTube views for Irene Cara was a lot more than 20,000 and would only prove my point. But it didn't. He just reiterated "no interest".
As for the Police, he thought it would probably need to get Sting's approval - and that may well be - but why not request the license from Universal and have them ask for Sting's approval? The only real difference in the single mix is that Sting's voice is much more audible, whereas it's buried in the album mix, and I can't imagine Sting wouldn't want a version released where you can actually hear his vocals.

I'm going to ask around and see if this might be something for Gordon Anderson's new label (formerly, he owned the "Collector's Choice Music" label.) I'd also suggest Wounded Bird, but Terry only reissues direct albums (often with bonus cuts), so this idea seems outside the realm of what Wounded Bird does. And FunkytownGrooves only issues R&B, not pop. Can anyone think of any other labels to release these top 40 hits? Sadly, Rhino is out of the question, and it doesn't sound like something Varese Sarabande can do or would want to.
Too bad we can't join together and start our own CD label, perhaps call it "The Pat Downey Chat Board Bandits' Top 40 Completists" label.

When I read the track list, this is the one song that I was surprised to see included. The Police very seldom show up on compilation CDs, so they must be difficult or expensive tracks to license.
I'm with you, though, Gordon, that there is not likely a reason Sting would be opposed to reissuing a unique single mix. Outside of this message board, I wonder how many people (Sting included) even know or remember that the single was mixed differently. The Police box set would have been an obvious place to include it, especially since they included two mixes of "The Bed's Too Big Without You."

It's funny you mention that, because it's not too far-fetched of an idea. Jimct and I were just talking about this the other day. If the record labels knew they didn't have to go digging in the vaults for rare single edits/mixes--if they knew we could supply our own sources--how difficult or expensive would it be to license songs for a compilation like this?

I'm certainly no expert on music licensing, but I do remember when we did the year-by-year Billboard compilations with Rhino, that we had to give them a pretty big list to make sure they could get 10 songs for each CD. We were told that some artists/labels were too cost prohibitive to even approach.
We also pitched a "hard-to-find on CD" series with them, but were told that such a series wouldn't sell enough to turn a profit. Such is business.

As Paul points out, it's all a matter of business. I am playing devil's advocate, so I will point out a few things:
1. Back in the "Have A Nice Day" series production Bill Inglot told me Rhino paid $1000 per cut for licensing. In the US there are mechanical royalties, meaning you pay more for each cut on a CD.
2. To whom would you target such compilations? Mostly collectors who are few in number. How would you advertise these offerings to the public? Advertising costs money. Retail CD stores are closing or have already closed.
3. CD's are not the most popular media today. Downloads have replaced them.
Overall to us it's a great idea, however, bulk sales count and there (sadly) isn't the mass market for such a product. I haven't even mentioned the production and distribution costs....

Of course i've sadly taken away the reserved shelf space
and blew out the candle. :-(
I forgot what the date was!
And yeah, the Police track should have given it away.
I too suspect this mix would have been on their box set
if anyone in their camp had recalled a different mix was
used for the single.
But for the rest, an inspired list of songs that seemed
right on target for a new Barry Scott CD!

Very good observations, Tom. Even if licensing is the same today as it was in 1990 (and assuming it's still $1,000 per cut), a 20-track CD would cost a minimum of $20,000 to license all the music (not counting mechanicals). If the disc was sold at $15/each, the break even point would be to sell 1,333 copies. (This, of course, is not taking into account any of the other costs involved.)

Wow. I've always been gullible. I guess I'll have to go cry myself to sleep, dreaming of a CD-quality release of "Old Fashioned Boy". ;-)

Boy do I want Stallion's "Old Fashioned Boy" on CD, too. It's a great song. It's a top 40 hit. It's licensable. The master tapes still exist (Casablanca). My friend Michael J. mentioned wanting this song (and he's not even on this board.) And also, Paul Edwards mentioned wanting it on CD recently. (He actually got my hopes up and thought it was on an import CD, but it turns out it wasn't.) Over the years, I've gotten at least 15 requests for the Stallion song on CD. And I'm not even a reissue label! (I just help them :) But I know it's one of the most wanted top 40 hits that people want on CD that isn't out anywhere. Hopefully, some reissue label will get the message and include this song on a CD! I think an all-Universal Records various-artist comp would be quite possible - it's just a matter of finding a 3rd party label that's willing to release it (or convincing Universal to do it themselves, but that's unlikely.) And I think the track listing above is pretty close to what it should be, ironically. We'll probably never know who posted it on the BSN board. They used the name "Barry Scott" and had a total of 1 post! I guess that was part of the April Fools joke - to use his name - and people believed it was him. When I emailed Barry this morning, I was kind of hoping he would tell me it's all true. But his response made it very clear to me it wasn't Barry who wrote the post, nor is any of it true.
Is there anyone else here who would buy a CD that had Stallion's "Old Fashioned Boy (You're the One)" on it?

I think most of us here would buy it in a heartbeat!
I wish I still had the complete list that we prepared back in 1995 for a proposed "hard-to-find on CD" series with Rhino. I recall that we came up with about 200 titles and "Old Fashioned Boy" was one of them.
