The hit version of this track from 1991 is not the original recording. Here is the background courtesy of Wikipedia:
""Do Anything" was written and recorded in 1987 on a 4-track recorder in (Frederick) Thomas's apartment in Minnesota. The song sat unfinished until (Elliot) Erickson began working on it again in 1989. The rap was originally recorded by Ingrid Chavez, a friend of the duo who improvised the rap in the studio. In 1990, the version with Chavez doing the raps was a local hit on Minnesota's WLOL-FM, where Erickson worked as a remix engineer. Once Natural Selection was signed to a recording contract, Chavez's raps were re-recorded by Niki Haris, because Chavez was by then under contract with Paisley Park Records."
Has anyone here come across the original recording featuring Ingrid Chavez? I am trying to track it down, but don't even know where to start. The B-side to the 1991 hit single features the "Raw Mix"--is it possible that this is the original version? If anyone has a digital copy they are willing to share I would greatly appreciate it.

I can't be of much help on the original, non-hit version, but I can supply the details of two different promo CD singles, both of which are on EastWest Records.
PRCD 3948-2
1. (non-described version) (listed 3:55; actual 3:57)
This disc specifically states "featuring Niki Haris."
PRCD 4175-2
1. Radio Remix (listed 3:59; actual 4:03)
2. Justin Strauss Remix (listed 6:00; actual 6:06)
3. Just Right Mix (listed 4:35; actual 4:39)
4. Radio Edit (listed 3:55; actual 3:56)
The "Radio Edit" on this CD is the same as the non-described version on the first disc. The first three tracks are all more-or-less the same remix, just with different lengths.

I do remember WLOL saying that "you can buy this now" when
they played the hit version, apparently referring to the
earlier version that wasn't for sale at all.

As far as I know, you simply can't. The original version was only played at WLOL-FM for obvious reasons. I don't think Frederick Thomas pressed CDs in mass quantity.
The Raw Mix is almost identical to the Single Mix (that is the official mix's name, per the commercial cassette single) minus Niki Haris' vocals.
There were two different pressings of the cassette single. Both are identical other than: The first pressing was simply credited to Natural Selection, while the second pressing was
credited to Natural Selection featuring Niki Haris. Ingrid Chavez was on Paisley Park, which is a WEA label. Natural Selection were on EastWest America, also a WEA label. There was
an article about Natural Selection on Billboard around the time "Do Anything" was hitting. I'm pretty sure the reason why they had to hire Niki was simply because Ingrid was not
interested.
I LOVE THIS SONG! The two follow ups were cute.
