I have a question about the top 10 AC hit "A Song For You" by Ray Charles. I have this only on a various artist "Hitmakers" radio-promo CD, and it's terribly distorted in the choruses, probably because it's compressed beyond belief (even more distorted/crackly than "Didn't We Almost Have It All" by Whitney Houston.) I didn't even know they compressed THIS much back in '93. Does anyone have this song on any CD other than "Hitmakers", and can they check and see if the chorus is distorting badly? I'd like to hope it's only on "Hitmakers", and that if the original CD single or Ray Charles CD wasn't compressed like this, maybe it will be fine. I don't recall it distorting the many, many times I heard this on AC radio back in the day. But then again, my ears were probably listening on a somewhat crude car radio.

Gordon, the song has long been a personal fave of mine, as well. As such, it
is handy - I have the promo CD single they sent to us, back in '93. (PRO-CD-
5977, 1 track, Album Version.) The P CD S face says that the track is from his
CD, "My World," if you'd like to know of another CD option for it. Keep an eye
out for an e-mail. Please let me know if it sounds better than your Hitmakers
source does.

Jim, thanks! I quickly checked on my computer speakers (I'll check with headphones tomorrow) but a quick comparison shows that the distortion is less (but not gone) and the compression is certainly less on the CD single. I had been wondering if digital rot was the cause on my "Hitmakers" CD. But it turns out the noises are apparent but less noticeable on your CD, which means CD rot couldn't have been the cause on mine, as they are in the same spots. (I'm guessing over-compression is why it sounds so bad on mine.) I'll compare closely over the weekend and match up EQ's because sometimes if one file is more trebly than the other it can make these crackly sounds more apparent. Thanks again, sir!

A fav here too! I drive route back then, and a really
good A/C station i enjoyed at the time featured this
song.
I too bought the cd single (i since sold it but i think
it was also the same promo. It had a cardboard picture
sleeve and only the one track.)
I'm sure mine is identical to Jim's - so Gordon, i'll
email you a sample file i just did.
I saw what you mean about the compression. And I can hear
they did record his vocal very hot, it almost "crackles"
a little because they blasted the levels - i ran it thru
the uncompress plugin - see what you think. You can also
try it with some different settings...
