Hi folks-
I'm trying to cut the ~6:20 album version of this song down to the single version, which was around 5 minutes, if I recall correctly.
I checked my 12" single, and it has the "Back to Life" remix, plus the LP version, I think. His greatest hits album "Ladies and Gentlemen" has the long LP version. Anyone know where the edits might go?
Thanks - Eric

No, the single version was the full-length album version. There was a radio edit, which I have on the promo, which I THINK ran around five minutes, but I'll have to check that out when I get home. Unless the cassette single was different from the CD single...

FYI - if you want to make your own edit, here are the cuts.
-Start on the downbeat at 0:08, removing the beginning of the intro
-Cut from 0:41.4 (right before the piano run on beat 4) to beat 4 at around 0:51.8.
-Cut from 2:16.2 ("yeah-yeah") to 2:26.7 ("Freedom"), removing the first half of the chorus.
-Cut from 4.30, around beat 2, to 4.40, removing 4 bars
-Cut from 5.06 to 5.16, removing a few "That's what you get" lines
-Cut from 5.24.6 ("baby") to 5.45.5 ("Freedom"). This is actually a crossfade, but a straight cut right after the downbeat will sound close.
The original fade is preserved on the single.

Whew! It'd probably be easier just to buy the promo single! ;)

This is one track which I believe suffers from any form of editing, but
if I had to choose, the UK edit (4:30) is a lot smoother than the US
edit which was edited by Mike Corbett who worked on other edits for
Sony like Mariah Carey's "I Don't Wanna Cry" or "Make It Happen"
with some pretty abrupt edit points, cringe.

Funny, I've always liked the US edit. I know both versions quite well, and the "Edit" on the promo CD has always sounded seamless to me.

You know how I hold you in high regard, so just listened to the US
edit again, I agree with you that edit points are seamless up to 4:34,
that crossfade kills it for me, it is really noticeable and sounds harsh
right between "do not make a man" and "freedooom". And
structurally, it kind of spoils the climb to the final chorus by
chopping off that section. But he did gain 30 seconds off. Maybe I
would have edited some of the chorus sections along the track as
was done in the UK edit which incidentally runs almost one minute
shorter and doesn't chop off the verse removed at 4:34 on the US
edit.

Huh, I just listened again specifically to the 4:34 edit/crossfade, and it's smooth and seamless to my ears. I didn't even realize it was an edit until I went back and listened to the LP version in that same spot.

I don't hear a crossfade on either of these edits. Are you sure that's what this
is?

You wouldn't hear a crossfade on the UK edit because there is none,
they did not edit nor crossfade at the discussed point. The reason
you don't hear it on the US Edit link you provided is that's not the
official US edit featured on CSK73559. I am not aware of any other
US promo CD's featuring edits of the album version, so I am betting
this was home made.

If that's the official UK edit in the link, it's a bit disappointing. The entire "it looks like the road to heaven" verse is gone. I'm so used to hearing the US edit (and to a lesser degree the full LP version), that it seems "wrong" to hear the song without that verse.

Aaron, I agree that is a verse that should have been left in on the UK
edit, that is one way they got it to last one minute less than the US
edit. From that point of view, I do prefer the US edit as well. What
seems "wrong" to you (and also me) on the UK edit is what happens
to me at 4:34 in the US edit, maybe it's because I have listened to
the album version mainly, and that crossfade seems forced to my
ears by jumping from "do not make a man" to "freedom", bypassing
the "all we have to do now..." that preceeds all previous choruses.
But this is all subjective, fun and interesting to read other points of
view or ear :)

For sure! I think it also depends on what you became accustomed to hearing the most. I've heard the US edit so many times, that I just expect the line "freedom" to follow at 4:34.
I wonder how many top 40 stations aired the full LP version. It hasn't been mentioned yet, but the "Edit" was actually track 2 on the promo CD single, with the LP version being track 1.

True and interesting point on the order of the two tracks. I couldn't help
myself and listened to that crossfade again. I now realize what bothers
my ears, it's the fact that his voice is faded out before he finishes
saying "do not make a man", the last time he says that phrase, he
sustains "man" longer than on the other verses and I love that. And the
crossfade ends it early. I think editing vocals can be tricky. Other that
that, I now prefer the US edit as well, so thanks Aaron!

Bumping this back up to post the "real" US Edit, not the bogus one that was on
YT.
