In the spirit of the Collecting 1982 on compilations thread, I dug out my notes from 1983.

I did A/B comparisons with every CD version I own of every song that peaked on the Hot 100 in 1983, plus lossless versions from libraries that others have assembled. I was able to assemble a pretty solid library of songs, with (in my opinion) the best-sounding versions of everything. I'll share some of my results, in case you want to hunt down some of the compilations that I used.

From the solid 1983 library, for each song, I identified compilations having comparable sound quality to my preferred version. In this case, comparable means a digital clone with a level change, a digital clone with an EQ change, or a version that used the same analog transfer. Adding compression/limiting or noise reduction automatically disqualifies a track from being comparable.

Then, I rounded up all the comparable versions, and identified all compilations that include 3 or more top 40 hits from 1983 that have sound quality comparable to my preferred version. These are versions that I'd be happy to use in my own library.

Then, I ranked them by number of comparable tracks, in descending order.

What I got is a pretty solid listing of some really good-sounding compilations. Some are remarkably inexpensive, a few are pricey. I couldn't test every disc ever made, of course, but I think I tested most or all of the common compilations that you'll ever be able to find.

Bottom line: if you own any of the discs I list below, you can be assured that the song I list from that disc sounds as good as any copy that I could find on CD.

Ron, in the thread about Spandau Ballet's "True", Aaron
posted that the version included on Rhino's Billboard
Top Hits: 1983 is not the correct 45 version due to
a slightly different edit in comparison to the proper
commercial 45 edit.

This much is true!

I haven't updated any of these monstrous posts to include that information. You'll find that there are many, many, many of these large posts sprinkled throughout the forum.

The most up-to-date info is on the page for the individual song, which is the one you found for "True".

Additionally, the edit of Air Supply's "Making Love
Out of Nothing At All" included on Rhino's
Billboard Top Hits: 1983 is also a wrong
recreation.

Regarding the David Bowie songs "China Girl" and
"Modern Love", the versions you listed in Sounds of
the Eighties: 1983 and Rockin' USA
respectively are not the true 45 versions. They are
wrong recreations which first appeared on
Changesbowie (1990) alongside the wrong
recreation of the "Let's Dance" 45 edit.

Ron, since you have already covered the Ryko "Let's
Dance" edit in another thread, here is the description
of the Ryko edits of "China Girl" and "Modern Love"
posted in a Bowie forum:

before the outro.
The Ryko Modern Love edit has the drum beats between
the first chorus and instrumental section, whereas
they are edited out of the original single.

The only way to get the correct 45 versions of "Let's
