This was the B-side of their 1976 Top 10 hit, "Fool To Cry", and peaked at
#49 on the BB Hot 100 in its own right, in 7/76.
Once the era of "the A-side now appeared on both sides of a promo 45"
became 90%+ of the norm (arguably, around 1973 or so), on occasion a
label would produce a separate promo 45 for the flip side. That was the
case here.
Since I wasn't yet working in Top 40 in May-ish of '76, I can't confirm
whether or not Top 40 radio were actually sent promo 45 copies for "Hot
Stuff". A more likely scenario could be that, since "Fool To Cry" was a
ballad, the label decided to service AOR stations with "Hot Stuff" promo
copies. I never remember hearing this side on 1976 Top 40 radio.
The primary reason for me starting this thread is because the "Hot Stuff"
promo happens to include a "Special Edited Short Version", on one side of
it. It has a listed time of (3:26), but an actual time of (3:30). (Deadwax: "ST
RS 32329-3 PP"). The "Long Version" has a listed time of (5:21), and an
actual time of (5:19.) (Deadwax: "ST-RS-31990-4 PP"). (FYI, the latter is
the same version that appears on the stock 45.)
The short version is an edit, and not just an early fade, as the intro is :05
seconds shorter (:19 seconds, as compared to :24 for the long version.
Both versions end cold.)
My apologies - I am currently unable to send out vinyl dubs, for any of the
editors out there. But I will soon be sending this promo 45 out to Aaron,
for a more detailed analysis. In time, I'm sure that he'll be able to add
more version difference specifics, allowing for accurate re-creations of it,
if desired.

Is the short version the same as the version found on the
Sucking In The Seventies CD? The version on that disc has
the 19 second intro, the cold ending and runs the same
length as the actual time Jim states above.

Santi, an *excellent* pickup by you! I didn't even remember "Hot Stuff" was
on that particular comp. I just pulled my copy, and played it. The version
sounded exactly like the short version of my promo 45, that I played 5 hours
ago. And since this same CD also included the correct DJ 45 short version for
its "Fool To Cry" A-side, I think we can now put this one to rest, knowing
that it's already on CD. Many thanks for the help!
