The opening guitar chords take me right back to 1978. And to King Of The Hill.

The LP version runs about 9:40. I have it on A&M's Classics Vol. 6 (1987), and I think it sounds pretty good.

The 45 edit runs about 3 and a half minutes. I'm a little unsure how fast the actual 45 runs, though.

The 45 edit on Rhino's Have A Nice Day Vol. 24 (1996) runs 3:36, and runs at the same speed as the LP version on Classics.

The 45 edit on Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 42 A Loss For Words (1995) runs 3:29, and runs about 1.9% faster than the LP version on Classics. I'd bet that this version uses the same analog transfer as A&M's Best Of, but I can't confirm. There are digital clones of A Loss For Words on:
  • Time-Life's AM Gold Vol. 25 1978 (1997; 1.9 dB quieter)
  • Time-Life's 2-CD Classic Soft Rock Vol. 10 Heat Of The Moment (2007; 1.77 dB quieter)
All of the above sound good, with seemingly low-generation source tapes, reasonable EQ, reasonable volume levels, no extra compression/limiting, and no evidence of noise reduction.

Can anyone confirm if the vinyl 45 is sped up, compared to the LP?

Ron, I can at least report to you that my 1978 A&M 2001 stock 45 has both a
listed & actual run time of (3:28).

Was there ever a promo issue of an edit of the album version?
ISTR back in the day hearing some stations playing a longer
than the single version, but it sure wasn't 9 minutes.

I've never run across one myself though...

You probably heard the promo 12" version called the "Special Edited
Version" found here: http://www.discogs.com/Chuck-Mangione-Feels-
So-Good/release/1148762. The printed time is 4:40.
