Not much to report on this one; just documenting everything here.

LP and 45 version (5:12)

The oldest CD I have that includes the song is Atlantic's 10 From 6 (1985), where it sounds just fine. Nice dynamic range, nice EQ, no evidence of noise reduction, nice long hissy fade, and what sounds like decent source tapes. Amazingly, every other CD I have with the song is based on the mastering from 10 From 6! The same analog transfer is used on:
  • Time-Life's 2-CD Guitar Rock (1990, shortens tail of fade)
  • Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 8 1975 (1990; differently-EQ'd digital clone)
  • Mystic Music/Warner Special Products' 2-CD Good Times (1991; differently-EQ'd digital clone)
  • Time-Life's 2-CD Rock Dreams (1993)
  • Time-Life's Guitar Rock Vol. 10 Classics (1994; digitally exactly 2.8 dB louder)
  • Westwood Promotions/Warner Special Products' 2-CD Seventies Party Mix (1996)
  • Razor & Tie's 2-CD Make You Sweat (1998)
  • Simitar's Stud Rock Heart Breakers (1998)
  • TVmusic4U/Warner Special Products' 2-CD Midnight Rock(2000)
Previously unreleased early fade (4:07)

JCI's 18 Rock Classics (1994) also uses the same analog transfer as Atlantic's 10 From 6 (1985), but fades early from 3:53 to 4:07. This length wasn't released on record when the song was a hit in 1975. Two other discs base their masterings on the JCI disc:
  • JCI's Only Rock 'N Roll #1 Radio Hits 1975-1979 (1996)
  • Simitar's Number Ones Classic Rock (1998; too loud and clips a lot; avoid)
Promo 45 version (3:30)

I don't have a copy of this, and it's never appeared on CD. Will gladly reverse-engineer it and post my findings, if someone would send me a copy.

My recommendation: For the LP/45 version, go with Atlantic's 10 From 6 (1985). Everybody else did!

Thanks, Aaron!

Promo 45 version (3:30)

Here are instructions for creating the promo 45 version from the LP version, using 10 From 6 as the source.

Segment 1
Extends from 0:00.0 to 1:25.7 of LP/45 version and promo 45 edit
Ends on a downbeat, following three-quick-hit drum fill

Remove 1:25.7 to 2:40.2 of LP version

Segment 2
Begins on a downbeat, following two-quick-hit drum fill
180 beats long
Extends from 1:25.7 to 3:31.0 of promo 45 edit
Extends from 2:40.2 to 4:45.5 of LP/45 version

Fade
24 beats long
Extends from 3:14.6 to 3:31.0 of promo 45 edit
Extends from 4:29.1 to 4:45.5 of LP/45 version

Your mixdown will run 3:31.0, with one edit at 1:25.7 and a fade from 3:14.6 to 3:31.0.
