The 7" label states a running time of 2.42.
The UK label Cherry Red have just put out a "Single Version" running 3.55. Is there a precedent for this edit?
Does the 2.42 version differ from the LP version in terms of mix, or is it simply an edit?

The version I have on CD runs just over three minutes. My source is the two disc set Fire: The Very Best Of from 1996. This song never reached the top 40 so of course it's not in the database.
I also have the 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection CD release (2004) where the song runs 3:55. Comparing the two the shorter version is not an edit but just an early fade. This disc has several longer versions for a couple of tracks so I would take a wild guess that this track is actually the LP length (instead of the single length). I do not have the Blue Thumb 45 but it's possible that all they did was fade the song to the 2:42 length (if it's true that the listed time is the actual time).
BTW, welcome to the chat board.

Thank you for the welcome message.
"Fire: The Very Best of" also has a 3:05 edit of "Yes We Can Can" when the 45 should run 3:55. Other CDs have the song running 3:55, so it's likely that the track was edited for time on "Fire: The Very Best of", if not a promo edit. It would seem that "Wang Dang Doodle" has received the same treatment.
There's a video on youtube of "Wang Dang Doodle". It's in mono and runs just under 2:40.
I'm actually more interested in the mix than the length. I've been wondering if the vocal spread of the LP mix was narrowed for radio/45.
I mistook the song as a Top 40 hit because it charted within the R&B Top 25. I'll label such threads "Off-Topic" in future.

The 3:05 edit of Yes We Can Can was neither the 45 nor any
promo edit. It's labeled as a previously unreleased edit
in Pat's database.

Yes, I suspected as much re "Yes We Can Can".
It's odd that Cherry Red would include a 3:55 version of "Yes We Can Can" but not the correct length version of "Wang Dang Doodle" as bonus tracks on their 2CD Expanded Edition of The Pointer Sisters/That's a Plenty.
