I know sometimes songs have shortened titles - like they leave off the beginning of the hook or the end of the hook. But sometimes they leave off words in the middle of the hook. Some hits that come to mind are:

Chicago's "Hard to Say I'm Sorry"
George Harrison's "What Is Life"
Johnny Rivers' "Rockin' Pneumonia - Boogie Woogie Flu"
Hall & Oates' "Kiss On My List"
Dr. Hook's The Cover of 'Rolling Stone'
Maxine Nightingale's "Right Back Where We Started From"
Vicki Lawrence's "The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia"
Bee Gees' "Love You Inside Out"

Can anyone think of other hit titles that do this same thing? I remember thinking of some others a while back but can't recall now.

Steve & Eydie - "I Want To Stay Here"

Back in my college days when I regularly hosted "Name That Tune" parties, this one was a guaranteed stumper. Whoever thought "I Just Want To Stay Here" was too long, ended up muddying the waters for decades. No surprise that when Steve & Eydie finally put it out on CD, they titled it "I Just Want To Stay Here And Love You."

"Will You Love Me Tomorrow" by the
Shirelles. One verse is sung as in the
title, but two other times, the word
"still" is added between "you" and "love".

"I'm Leaving It Up to You" by Dale &
Grace. Sometimes, the word "all" is added
between "it" and "up". This is universally
true in the Donny & Marie Osmond version,
which lists the title as "I'm Leaving It
(All) Up to You".

"(You're My) Soul and Inspiration" by the
Righteous Brothers. They sing "you're my
soul and MY inspiration" (to my ears, and
contrary to lyric sites, they elongate the
second "my" to two syllables rather than
singing another word between "my" and
"inspiration").

I agree the lyrics sites are wrong, but it's not an elongated "my." Based on covers from some other artists and a live performance from
Bill and Bobby in 1966 on (of all places) The Andy Williams Show, I'm almost positive what they're singing is "my LIFE's
inspiration."

Back to the subject at hand, I believe the Captain & Tennille add the word "that" to "The Way I Want To Touch You."

I think there are quite a few titles that leave out a "that" when it's in the middle of the hook, like the aforementioned Captain & Tennille song you speak of, and the Vicki Lawrence one I mentioned above. I don't recall the others, but when this subject came up somewhere about 10 years ago, it seemed like it happened more than a few times.
