If anyone remembers, these two top 10 hits back in 2003 had releases with different artists vs the album version. Why Don't You & I was done with Chad Kroeger and Alex Band and Into You was done by Ashanti and Tamia.

Now if memory serves me correctly radio chose the Chad Kroeger and Ashanti versions even when the CD singles had Santana and Fabolous have no choice but to record with other artists. Nickelback was hugely popular and Ashanti was hitting the top 10 quite frequently back then. I remember reading something that the record company did not want direct competition against the new Nickelback album which is why Santana had Alex Band on it instead.

So just like Picture and no one really remembering Ms. Moore singing the other part, Sheryl Crow is the go to version. I don't have billboard data to look at but does anyone remember the Band and Tamia versions being more popular?

I subscribed to Top Hits U.S.A. back in 2003 and they only
serviced the 'Alternate Version' of Why Don't You And I
with Alex Band.

I was working in Detroit when "Why Don't You And I" was a hit, and we played the Alex Band version exclusively. This is also the version that radio was serviced via promo CD single. To my knowledge, there is not a US promo CD single with the Chad Kroeger version.

By the time "Into You" was a hit, I had just started a new job at Radio Disney, and unsurprisingly, we didn't play Fabolous. I still listened to the Dallas CHR stations, though, and I don't ever recall hearing the Ashanti version. Again, the Tamia version is what radio was serviced on the promo CD single. There are no promo US CD singles with the Ashanti version.

Now, it's highly possible that some stations opted to play these two songs from the full-length CDs. I just didn't hear them in the markets where I was at the time.

When "Picture" came out, radio was serviced with the Sheryl Crow version, which was sent to my old station on two different Lava/Atlantic CD-R promos. A factory-pressed promo CD single with the Allison Moorer version also made it onto music directors' desks, but I believe it was largely ignored. I've never once heard that version on the air. I can't say for sure the order in which those were sent, but if I had to guess, I'd say the Kid Rock & Sheryl Crow CD-R promos were sent out second, after it became apparent that most stations were opting to play the song from the album instead of the promo CD with the Moorer version.

I consider the Alex Band and Tamia versions to be the true
hit versions.

What's interesting about "Picture" is that the Allison
Moorer version is the one featured on the commercial CD
single. I do remember the local Country station playing
the Moorer version for at least a couple of weeks, but
they eventually switched to the more popular Crow version.

One of those rare cases (as Whitburn even noted in the annual choosing Crow over Moorer) where one version is clearly superior to another even without a commercial release...
