The year-end Hot 100 chart for 2020 has been published.

Not surprised at all with the Top 2 songs. The year ends
seem to favor songs that stay on the charts longer, and
those two songs are now the 1st and 2nd place champs as
far as weeks in the Top 10 are concerned.

I noticed "Trollz" wasn't on there at all, despite going
to #1. I guess its 4 week chart total didn't give it
enough points to make the year end tally.

I had never even heard the #3 or #7 songs of the year until just now: "The Box" by Roddy Ricch and "Life Is Good" by Future, respectively. Both are very forgettable and mundane trap/rap songs.

Don't feel bad, I only recognized 2 songs in the top 10,
and only a handful more in the rest of the 100. Maybe
some would be familiar by ear but not by title/artist.

Gettin' out of touch with pop culture I guess... :-/

I still listen to my local top 40 stations somewhat, and my couples tend to be in their '20s and request some of the current music. That's probably why I recognized most of the top songs even by artist and title. It's highly possible "The Box" and "Life Is Good" never got any CHR spins locally, though.

My local CHR (out of Rockville, MD) played The Box in
hot rotation for a while....

My guess is that the Rhythmic leaning station played the heck out "The Box," but I don't listen to them as often as Kiss FM. Quite possibly the song peaked during the pandemic when I wasn't in my vehicle and listening to the radio.

"The Box" did make it to #11 on Billboard's Mainstream
CHR chart while the Future/Drake collabo "Life Is Good"
only made #28.

The Box is nothing compared to the sexual vulgarity in WAP...

Ed, how were you able to get the modified top 40 to include 2 more weeks? And can you get one that goes through the end of December when we get to that point?

It's kind of hard to read the above on my computer. But still interesting to see how some songs like Savage Love, which seems to be at #8

Gordon, it appears that Ed is using the same formula we use for the Pop Annual. It usually takes a few months into the
next year before the previous year's numbers all shake out properly.

I did a quick "find and replace" in MS Word to remove the extra spaces. That's what's causing
the forum to insert the "& nb sp" everywhere.

Some of the numbers Ed posted appear to be incorrect.

Example: Trollz charted for 2 weeks in the Top 40 and 4 on the Hot 100.

I'm just wondering but how do you treat remixes in 2020 that ended up bumping the song to #1? This was a year where it was used as a weapon to propel the song to the top

Doja Cat - Say So (Adding Nicki Minaj)
Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo- Savage Love (Adding BTS)
Megan Thee Stallion - Savage (Adding Beyonce)

I'm more inclined to treat the original hits as the hit version. The remixes (like this year for Levitating) are nice and all but the original songs IMHO are the ones I heard on the radio and were popular enough without the remixes. Thoughts?

paul.....some of the extra numbers are for tie-breaking
purposes....for example....trollz was number 1 for 1
week,
2 wks in the top 10, 4 weeks in the top 100....life goes
on was the same info...1, 1, 2 but only 3 weeks in the
top
100...that's why the extra number is in there...usually
it's just peak position, peak date, weeks at peak
position, weeks in top 10, wks in top 40 and then yearly
rank....sometime when songs tie on those parameters,
then
the weeks in top 100 comes into play...hope this
helps..yes, and paul is correct....it usually takes 6
months for all the previous years songs to fully drop
off the hot 100....there are still 3 songs from last
years top 25 that are still in he top 40, no less the
top 100.....'mood', 'blinding lights', 'positions'.

Remixes are tricky - I truly don't feel that Savage Love should be a #1 for BTS
because of a 7 day window when a remix sold well.

The Due Lipa song is different - the hit version of Levitating IS the "Da Baby"
remix, with widespread national airplay. May not be making some AC stations,
but is still recognized as the definitive hit. Same with Savage. Not so much
Nicki's Say So remix.

For the one or two week "remix wonders" we generally just show a trivia note under the title.
