I'm referring to songs that had intros removed for radio NOT because the promo single edited them out, but because radio stations typically decided to cue past the intro, whether it was spoken, musical, or some other sound effect.
A few examples that come to mind for me:
Madonna - Like A Prayer (I have never, not once, ever heard the opening guitar riff played--not during the initial chart run or as an oldie, regardless of the station or format)
Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 (only heard the quiet "beat box" intro before the guitar kicks in around 0:08 one time--probably because the DJ forgot to cue the CD)
Primitive Radio Gods - Standing Outside A Broken Phonebooth With Money In My Hand (cued past the sound effects, which are even included on the radio edit version)
Sade - The Sweetest Taboo (cued past the rain FX)
Glenn Frey - The Heat Is On (during its initial run, I remember it being cued to the initial "woosh" around 0:13)
Ta Mara & The Seen - Everybody Dance (cued past "jungle sounds")
El DeBarge - Who's Johnny (cued past soft percussion to "woosh" sound around 0:15)
Pet Shop Boys - Opportunities (cued past soft percussion to piano at ~0:12)
Van Halen - Why Can't This Be Love (for the first couple of decades of this song's life, I only heard the full version, but in recent years radio seems to cue it up to the synths at 0:11)
Europe - The Final Countdown (stations that play the LP version tend to cue to the ubiquitous synth riff at 0:13)
ABC - When Smokey Sings (don't think I've ever heard anyone play the count-off at the beginning)
Bon Jovi - I'll Be There For You (cued to ~0:07)
Living Colour - Cult Of Personality (this one is split--rock radio played the full intro while Top 40 cued to the guitar riff at 0:10)
Fresh Prince - Summertime (cued past the "drums please" and record scratching, though I can't remember exactly whether KDWB cued to the first drum hit or the base around 0:05)
Shanice - I Love Your Smile (cued to bass at 0:10)

George Michael "Faith" edited out that organ.
My local station now plays "Don't stop til you get
enough" by MJ with the vocal part edited out and begins
on the wail.
Even Michael edited out the vocal intro on "I just can't
stop loving you".
We should do a counter-thread where a countdown is never
edited off like Billy Joel's "A matter of trust" or
Willie Nelson's "On the road again".

Was the spoken intro to Prince 1999 also on the 45 version?
I frequently remember this part never being played on the radio.

It was already edited out of the 45 so radio didn't have to cue past it.

I know there was a second version with a long fade in, but I don't recall hearing that on the radio at all. I'm pretty sure the
stations I heard the song on cued past the fade in and started with the flourish-type sound after it.

This YouTube post has always baffled me:

I own this promo but my copy has the entire "drums
please" in tact whereas this YouTube post does not. So I
have always been curious if some promos were pressed with
the intro cut off.

I suspect the poster just edited out the first few seconds. I have that promo, too (and at one time had a second copy) and both began with "drums please".

I've only heard the song with the "drums please" intro, officially. I have two different promos and a retail single, and all have the full intro.

On the remix of Alias' Waiting For Love, I used to cue past the opening keyboard and start the song on the three synthesized snare hits. Off of a jingle that worked well.
Crazy by Seal. I used to cue past the opening soft portion and what sounded like soft improvisation on Seal's part. Then I started with the climactic "Dum" about eight seconds in.
Many AC station started Your Song by Elton John on the first piano strike, removing the first few seconds of soft keyboard.
Londonbeat's I've Ben Thinking About You - often removed the first three drum hits and started off the downbeat, though there may have been a promo created this way.

Which is how the short side of the promo 45 was issued. The long side had the vocal intact, as did a
later reservice of the short version.
Any station I worked at from 1974 on either played music from carts or a digital playout, so these
decisions were made my the PD/MD, not the jocks.
"Freeze Frame" - J. Geils (cued past "freeze frame" and camera sfx)
"Higher And Higher" - Rita Coolidge (cold intro removed, cued to bass notes)
"I Don't Wanna Wait" - Paula Cole (same idea as Rita)
"Killer Queen" - Queen (finger snaps bypassed)
"The Way" - Fastball (cued past sfx)
I'm sure there were more, but that's all I can think of off-hand. Most of these were done to make things
flow better, or to bypass something that would be barely audible on-air. Likewise, fade-in intros were
often tightened.
At the other end of things, we faded the Cranberries' "Dreams" early (before the yodeling).

I think I also remember hearing The Bangles "Hazy Shade
Of Winter" that way on one of the stations in my area.
Most of the long fade-in was cut off, and it started a
few seconds before the guitar came in. From what I
understand, some stations just cued past the fade in
completely and had it start with guitar.

I was always surprised that there was no cd promo edit for Faith put out that deletes the organ. After all what radio station wanted to play 40 seconds of organ before a song? I remember getting the album in 1988 to listen to and going like "what's this organ at the beginning?, where is the version I heard on the radio?"

Yes, but the studio itself never issued an "official" promo for it to the masses. I don't think TM Century was available for purchase by consumers, that is what I meant. Sorry I did not clarify.

Correct. I've also never seen any promo CD at all for "Faith" (only 45s), although two of the other singles from the album were sent out on promo CDs (Monkey & Kissing A Fool).

Was the flapamba intro included on the 45 version of Ricky Don't Lose That Number? I highly suspect it wasn't.
I might have to listen to the "Citizen" collection to be sure it was there as well, and not only on the album version.

When the song was a current, I did the same thing when I
played it at my weddings and events.
