My promo 45 calls the listed and actual stereo (4:03) side (same as the stock 45) the "LONG VERSION". The stereo flip says "SHORT VERSION", lists a running time of (3:38), but actually runs (3:40). Deadwax for short side: 12518-S-SHORT-SM1.

To create the 45 version, chop off the hi-hat intro, so that the song begins with the first snare hit.
Edit out 0:03.4 to 0:12.6 with what you have left (on the snare/cowbell hit just before the rhythm guitar).
Edit out 3:23.1 to 3:32.0 of what's left, making your edit on the hand clap after the bass drum (vocal is slightly clipped on this edit).
Cut off 4:04.2 to end. Fade from 3:42 to 4:04 (end).
The promo 45 version is an early fade of the commercial 45 version, fading from 3:25 to 3:40.

John's not alone. I'm having trouble with the first edit as well (I'm not getting a snare/cowbell hit at 3.4 when I edit out the hi-hat intro).
Obviously I'm doing something way wrong.

This is why I don't usually post edit instructions! I'll be back with further info shortly...

I added some additional cues above, but my timing seems to be correct. The cowbell and the snare hit at the same time, so it's not a real prominent cowbell. Anyone else envisioning Will Ferrell's out-of-control cowbell playing on "Don't Fear The Reaper?"

Well, I'm close, I think. Always tough when you don't have the original source material as a guide...
