Seals' only Hot 100 (BB 42, CB 48) entry after shifting to
country. The song was a #1 Country (BB, CB, RR) and AC hit
(10 BB, 11 RR) as well. Were there different versions of
this song? I originally had the song on 45, but thought
the version included on some subsequent compilations
differed in how he sang the second chorus and in the length
of the ending fade. Any thoughts?

Great record co-written by Paul Davis.
I am unaware of any additional versions.
Hopefully someone can confer (or deny) my limited
research...

I have come across a couple instances where the song fades
later on some vs. others but it's the same receording.

I've never heard any different versions and the comps he
put out were all Capitol/EMI related so I don't think there
was a re-recording. Country isn't usually known for
alternate mixes or even edits with exception of Alabama.
"My baby's got good timin" and "You still move me" are pure
crossover quality and well polished. Latimore (from Miami)
covered "You still move me" and I didn't think he didn't it
justice. Seals had very distinct phrasings.

A lot of Dan Seals' solo output is criminally overlooked.
Very interesting mix of material on those 80s albums.
What's unique about Dan is that he played guitar left-
handed but didn't switch around the strings so he was
essentially fingering all the chords upside-down which
sometimes made for more interesting voicings than what a
standard strung guitar might have had.

Alabama….and a lot of RCA artists. RCA was notorious for issuing alternate
or promo mixes of their country singles in the 1980’s and early 90’s. Earl
Thomas Conley, Restless Heart, Dolly, Kenny, and yes - even Alabama.

I worked in country radio in the '90s and there were many edits and
even a few alternate mixes. I'd say edits were as common there as
they were in pop music.
As for "Bop", I'm not aware of any official alternate versions. When it
was a current, one of my local stations played a custom version with
Dan Seals singing "I wanna bop with the Q Zoo all morning long" . The
ending choruses were rearranged a bit as well. But again, I'm sure it
was a custom version and not an official release.

Played it when it was new, never heard anything but the same mix/length version here, as well. I recall us talking at the station about how odd the video was showing much older (like WWII-era) people dancing when the song had more of a 50s flavor to it.

Dan did issue In a Quiet Room cd in 1995 on Intersound and
did a subsequent volume in 1997. It appears these are re-
recordings that don't exactly hide the fact that they are
that. "Bop" was issued on the first volume.

Thanks Scanner for doing the research!
I like the ending fade better on the (supposed) LP
version because it gives a little louder & longer sax
solo (Jim Horn) than the hit 45 version. I do like the 45
version's 2nd chorus vocal inflections better, though.
I thought I would have to track down the 'Won't Be Blue
Anymore' LP version, but it turns out I have it on a TM
Century/Mobile Beat 2 Mobile DJ compilation.
What I DON'T have is a CD version of the correct fade of
the 45 mix. My 45 ends with Dan Seals vamping something
like "Yeah, You" on the sax fade, but my CD versions dump
before that.
Does anyone out there have a CD with the correct 45 mix
fade??

This one also has more of a "chugging" prominent bass
throughout.
This appears to be put out by Varese if the cover matches
the music in the video. There are other slight, slight
mix differences regarding loudness of guitar in bridge,
etc. I think Varese got an alternate mix which had to be
done in the 1985 range because you would never be able to
recut the backgrounds with it's tight production.
To my ears, it sounds like the Varese mix uses the first
chorus and the single mix has a different chorus which is
similar to the penultimate. Overall, the Varese mix
sounds off and like one they were kicking around in the
mid 80's. Actually this appears to be album version.

If anyone has the 'Won't Be Blue Anymore' LP could they
please check if the Varese version actually is the original
version as "Bop" was the 2nd single off of an already
released album (so EMI could have easily decided to remix
it for optimum airplay).
