Recently acquired a series issued in 1994 called Big 12 Inches (Arcana-9135) from Hong Kong. This concerns the release on Vol 3.

https://www.discogs.com/release/14881277-Various-Big-12-Inch es-Vol-3-49-Rare-and-Hard-To-Get-Mixes

Being a huge Police fan this version runs 5:02. Considering Aaron and I in the past tracked down EVERY Police single, LP and configuration this one is just....different.

What makes this different?

The intro is :48 long.
Its called "Long version"
At 2:22 (the baby please ends abruptly) the notes are extended slightly longer unlike the 45 and until 2:49 when it returns to "Can't you see"
3:37 fades I'll be watching you and then its a long instrumental break down until 4:16 when it jumps back in with I'll Be Watching...
The harmonies are just different at the end. It sounds like an alternative take.
The last few seconds around 4:58 stop suddenly with Sting not having any backing vocals saying I'll Be Watching You.

Anyways is this legit?

BTW such an awesome song should at least have its own thread!

It certainly is different! I don't like the sound quality.
It's edgy in the upper mids. It's like a cleaned-up
needledrop.

Is this the mix you are talking about?

https://youtu.be/R70jQb-ffdI

I've never heard it before... and I can't find a source in Discogs for it. The video doesn't list a source, calling it "unofficial."

I found several videos, though, that claim to be "lost extended versions," and they're all different, so take what the captions say with a grain of salt. :-)

This is interesting!

It sounds like a homemade remix from the stems (the individual multi-track tracks). There's a ton of songs with stems out in the wild, and it wouldn't surprise me if this is one of them.

This is what I suspect as well.

Hope you didn't pay too much because that series, not to be confused with the similarly named Buddha Records compilations from 1999, is all fake.

It is not actually from 1994 or Hong Kong. It only appeared on the scene about two years ago, and contains a lot of very clean and well-remastered vinyl rips, CD rips, and homemade remixes from stems.

The tracks I believe are homemade remixes are on volumes 3 thru 7:

• The Police - [Big 12 Inches vol. 3 CD4 #02] Every Breath You Take (Long Version)
• Europe - [Big 12 Inches vol. 4 CD4 #08] The Final Countdown (Special Long Version)
• Yes - [Big 12 Inches vol. 4 CD4 #09] Owner of a Lonely Heart (Vocal Remix)
• Yes - [Big 12 Inches vol. 4 CD5 #14] Owner of a Lonely Heart (Drum-a-Pella)
• Linda Lewis - [Big 12 Inches vol. 5 CD3 #12] Class/Style (I've Got It) (Remix)
• Elton John - [Big 12 Inches vol. 5 CD4 #04] I'm Still Standing (Extended Re-Mix)
• Van Halen - [Big 12 Inches vol. 5 CD4 #07] Jump (Special Extended Version)
• Elton John - [Big 12 Inches vol. 5 CD4 #13] I'm Still Standing (Percappella)
• Foreigner - [Big 12 Inches vol. 6 CD4 #01] Waiting for a Girl Like You (Extended Version)
• Kenny Loggins - [Big 12 Inches vol. 6 CD4 #08] Footloose (Dance Version)
• Survivor - [Big 12 Inches vol. 6 CD4 #10] Eye of the Tiger (12" Re-Mix)
• Survivor - [Big 12 Inches vol. 6 CD5 #07] Eye of the Tiger (Dub Re-Mix)
• Skill - [Big 12 Inches vol. 6 CD6 #01] Caroline (Alternate Unreleased Version)
• Toto - [Big 12 Inches vol. 7 CD3 #05] Rosanna (Special Version)
• Foreigner - [Big 12 Inches vol. 7 CD3 #06] Urgent (Extended Version)
• Men at Work - [Big 12 Inches vol. 7 CD3 #08] Overkill (Special Extended Dance Mix)
• Bee Gees - [Big 12 Inches vol. 7 CD4 #10] Tragedy (Disco Mix)

I'm also thinking that while this one sounds legit, might still be a fan reconstruction:
• Bee Gees - [Big 12 Inches vol. 3 CD3 #06] Night Fever (Special Disco Version)

I agree with PopArchivist, "Every Breath You Take" by the
police should have its own thread.
I take this opportunity to ask you if someone in the
forum has noticed that the version of the video is
different from the LP and 45 version, since in the video
version (for me) the sound of the drums sounds different,
in addition sting's voice sounds different, cleaner I
would say and to not have the choirs at the end of the
song, does anyone know if this version was released on
cd? I have it, ripped from The Police – Every Breath You
Take The DVD (2003).

Originally, the video soundtrack for "Every Breath You Take" was an early fade of the LP/45 version.

The video collection DVD from 2003 replaced the original audio with then-new 5.1 and stereo remixes.

There were actually four versions of the video shown on MTV. The most common was black and white, but they also aired separate blue tinted, red tinted and yellow tinted versions - the colors of the stripes on the sleeve of parent album Synchronicity. It was a surprise which one you'd get at different times throughout the day.

Later they seemed to default to the B&W, but MTV Classic still has these in their rotation and you can occasionally catch one of the color tinted transfers with the original audio track.

I do think there was something different about the video compared to the Synchronicity version.

Yes Nightaire, that is the version.

Maybe Aaron or somebody who has the pre-2003 DVD of the video can tell us if its actually slightly different then the LP version.

Maybe this thread can be redeemed after all lol.

And I am sure no one has to remind all of us how MASSIVE this song was in 1983 in a year where Billie Jean was just as huge....
