The LP version runs 5:20. I know the radio wasn't completely averse to playing
songs over five minutes, but it wasn't the norm. Was there ever a short edit
release for this #10 single?

No "official" edit that I'm aware of at the time.

Paul is right, no official edit exists.

And, it's getting harder to find Billy's 45 versions as
often the 45 versions are replaced by the LP versions on
greatest hits collections etc.

I noticed another one of his longer songs, "This Is The
Time", also doesn't seem to have any edits for it,
either.

I always heard the full version, as it's so good it doesn't seem like five
minutes(to be fair the vocal stops at 4:15, then a long outro). But it wouldn't
surprise me if DJs simply ramped up the 30 second intro, cued past the first 15
seconds and started when the full band kicks.
Coincidentally, neither song had a music video.

By the way, did anyone here (besides me) ever hear the
intro of "An Innocent Man" come on the radio and think
they were going to hear Linda Ronstadt's "Blue Bayou"?
Their intros sound similar.
