Hi all, I've been working on my country music lately and I'm wondering if there is anything remotely similar to Pat's service (and this forum), but for country music. Looking for CD sources for single and DJ edits/versions would be just about impossible were it not for Pat's DB but I can't find a similar country service. Any ideas?

In one of my previous posts, the subject came up of what form of music is least represented in a CD format. It was agreed that it was
country. I am mostly referring to classic country (anything older than 30 years). If it's newer than 30 years, I am clueless. I
haven't found anything that covers country like Pat's database for Pop/Rock. Of course, there is Discogs & 45cat that I use often.
The Joel Whitburn books on Country & Western give me an idea of what I am looking for, but some country artists are terribly
underrepresented on CD in what I call Classic Country. Some country artists have a 10-12 song 'best of' CD when they should have a 30
or 40 track anthology. -Bill.

Good luck finding anything remotely like this site for Country music. Maybe someone here could start one!
One thing to keep in mind on classic Country especially, is that there are lots of re-recordings out there, so
always watch out for those.

I don't have nearly as much country in my library as I do
Top 40 music from the 50's through today, but looking
through the country music I have, 75-80% of the titles
are the same as the LP versions. Pat's database helps a
lot with the country crossovers in detailing LP vs. 45
versions/mixes.
Even though this lists what's on GoldDiscs from TM, it
does help with what version that TM put in their
libraries. Keep in mind with this search for a single
artist, you have to put their last name first, then their
first name.

I worked in country radio from 1997 to 2004 and I was amazed at the
number of album/single version differences which included edits, early
fades, and also a few mix differences. It seemed like almost every other
single was different from the album version. TM Century GoldDisc for
the most part did great with using the single versions, at least for '90s
country.

I think in a lot of cases with crossovers as well, there was a push for multiple mixes of hits to cater to different formats. Faith Hill and Shania releases are notable here.
Prior to thrity years ago though, it seems there were not a LOT of single specific versions.

Other than singles that crossed over, how many copies did even a top 10 country single generate? Now maybe it was
different in regions where country music was much bigger than New England, but I don't recall seeing much in the ways of
country 45s in any record store I ever visited.
Of friends, co-workers or acquaintances of mine who were country music fans, few ever actually bought any records.

In Eastern Massachusetts, I never found country-only 45s in stores, but
when I went to Western Mass for college, I found quite a lot of country 45s
in the local mall record store.
Also, I agree that older (80s, 70s) country is very underrepresented on CD.
In recent years, I listened to old country countdowns on radio, and I'd
discover top 30 hits, for instance, that were quite good, but I checked and
there never was a CD. Even top 10 hits by TG Sheppard are nowhere to be
found on any of his CDs including his comps. And some really big country
artists like Barbara Mandrell have not had too many albums released on CD
(although recently, several of her "missing" CDs were released digitally.)
Even icon Tanya Tucker falls into this same category. When I wanted to buy
all their '80s and late '70s albums on CD, I was surprised at how much never
came out by these 2 country icons.

Longtime reader that just registered to post in this forum. I’ve
gotten a LOT of great music info from this site over the years
and have great respect and admiration for the experts and
collectors that share their vast knowledge here.
Although I do enjoy older pop/Top 40 music too I’m primarily a
lifelong fan of country music. 40+ years in country radio both on-
air and as a program director. Very familiar with 20th century
country hits and have a huge personal library of country 45’s,
LP’s & CD’s.
Many radio promo 45’s, CD singles & compilations are in my
collection so hopefully I can answer some of the questions
concerning country single versions & radio edits as well as their
CD availability. As RichM921 noted in his post there were many
country single edits & remixes especially during the 1980’s &
90’s. I’m still discovering some of them to this day as my station
played the 45’s on the radio (or dubbed them to cartridge tapes)
so I did not do an A/B comparison to the album version for every
song. When CD singles became pervasive, we played those
until we transitioned to a digital system and played all music
from a hard drive.

Retail availability of country 45’s was mostly dictated by regional
factors. In areas where country music & country radio was a
significant factor it was much easier to find country records.
Generally better availability at retail locations in the south, mid-
west and southwestern locations than locations in the east and
northeast where country music generally did not become a
significant player until the late 80’s or 90’s. In my home area the
record departments at most chain stores did not carry country
45’s but several mom & pop music stores sold all the latest hits
as well as some older country 45’s. Clearly there was a decent
market for country music or they would not have carried it.
For many years other than the country crossover records that
had mass appeal, the largest purchaser of most country 45’s
was the jukebox operators. Because country fans tended to be
older back in the day the adults were more apt to purchase
country music on albums or tapes than on singles. Country
album sales were not tracked until the mid-60’s. Of course, it’s
very difficult to extrapolate if a particular song was the actual
motivation for an album purchase.

The 2008 Universal vault fire is the major reason for the lack of
album reissues from MCA, Dot & ABC/Dot country artists. Tanya
Tucker & Barbara Mandrell are among the artists whose tapes
were destroyed. But recently UMG apparently located tapes
elsewhere in the world and has released downloads of albums
that were never issued on CD. Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn and
Don Williams have also had a significant number of their albums
added to the UMG download catalog.
Corporate disinterest in releasing vintage country albums on CD
pre-2008 fire is unforgivable. To their credit though the UMG
labels generally did a fairly good job of issuing hit compilations
by most of the major country acts on their roster so at least the
majority of big hits received CD release.
Agree that T.G. Sheppard is an act whose catalog has been
underserved by digital releases. Only a portion of his hits have
been released on CD. His 1975 – 1977 releases on Motown
subsidiaries Melodyland & Hitsville have been mostly
overlooked. Motown: The Complete #1’s box set included his
first two #1 hits Devil In A Bottle and Tryin’ To Beat The Morning
Home. Both are available as individual download tracks. Nine
T.G. Sheppard Warner Brothers albums are now available as
downloads and some contain singles that have not been issued
on CD.

Thanks Ken. I'll have to look into T.G.'s digital WB albums. I think one of the
singles I was looking for was his hit remake of Nilsson's "Without You", which
peaked at #10 or #12, I think.
Actually, I just checked Spotify, and the only version that continues to be there
is a live album version - not the original LP version. It amazes me that so many
top 10 country hits have yet to make it to CD. (I know a few pop top 10's
haven't either, but there's many more for country.)

"Without You" was the only brand new track on the 1983 T.G.
Sheppard's Greatest Hits Warner Brothers/Curb album. To date
WB has never reissued either of T.G.'s original two Greatest Hits
albums on CD. Instead they released two new compilations "All
Time Greatest Hits" [1991] and "Super Hits Series" [2000]
However both had the same 12 tracks in the same sequence.
Now that some of T.G's other Warner albums have been issued
as downloads perhaps WB will make those two original hit
collections available digitally to fill in some holes in his digital
discography.
So far I have not found "Without You" on any WB various artists
CD compilation so a vinyl dub would be the only source.
For the record, in 1992 Curb issued a 12 track Best Of T.G.
Sheppard CD. It contained one brand new track Everything I Do
(I Do For You) plus 10 Warner Brother singles and his first #1 hit
on Melodyland. Three tracks were new to CD - Devil In A Bottle
[Melodyland], Mister D.J. and his duet with Clint Eastwood Make
My Day. The other eight songs were issued on the WB comps.
T.G. has re-recorded his hits a time or two so it muddies the
water when searching for his original hit recordings.

There are some original T.G. Sheppard albums on Qobuz under
the Time-Life label. They are all original versions of his
songs. But, there's a lot of re-recorded tracks if you do a
search for his name.

John, I'll have to check out the qobuz albums. So if they are listed as on the
Time-Life label, they're all original albums?
Ken, I have that TG Sheppard comp with (Everything I Do) I Do It For You.
Hopefully, WB will digitally put out the comp that has the song.

Audio samples & album covers are from the original Warner
Bros/Curb albums. Not sure how or why they have the Time/Life
imprint.

Those sets have been out for several years now. BGO just
included them in their latest email blast. Great job remastering.
Unfortunately no unreleased bonus tracks. Just a straight reissue.
