Author: aaronk
Subject: 1295
Posted: 09 June 2010 at 8:30am

I just did a close examination of the tracks on the promo CD, thanks to Jim. It appears we have at least SIX unique mixes of this song. The five tracks on the promo CD are all different, even though some of them sound nearly identical. The mix that appears on Ultimate Collection, as Todd points out, is also slightly different than the single version and doesn't match any of the promo CD versions. Here's the rundown of the promo CD tracks:

1. This is the single version.
2. This is a short version of the 12" I Ain't Lyin' Mix. It cannot be edited from the 12" though.
3. This is very similar to the 7" Listen Baby Mix, but it has an additional bass guitar overdub throughout.
4. I agree with Andy that the LP version is pretty lame.
5. While similar to the 7" I Ain't Lyin' Mix, there are additional instrumental sections in the 12" version, and it replaces the third verse with an instrumental section.

Edited by aaronk

Yes, they are both the "7 Inch Listen Baby Mix" and are both identical up until about the 2:27 mark. However, an edit occurs on the cassette single that cannot be replicated from the CD. That's because the bass line is removed on the cassingle from 2:29 to 2:39 during the verses: "It may be factual, it may be cruel. Everybody plays the fool". The bass remains intact during these same verses on the Ultimate Collection disc.

That said, the database should have a comment for the Ultimate Collection CD to the effect of: (neither the 45 nor LP version, though this is the same remix as the 45 version). I believe this is also holds true for at least two other CDs in the database:

Radio Waves of the '90s - Pop Hits (Universal Special Products 314583609)
Smokey Robinson/Aaron Neville - Winning Combinations (Universal Special Products 440068515)

It turns out this is the version I've always heard played on radio, so I stand corrected. The "7 Inch Listen Baby Mix" appears on Aaron Neville's Ultimate Collection CD, but it runs longer than the cassette single version. (The database incorrectly states this CD contains the LP version, which is what threw me off. I believe the 45 version also appears in extended form on other CDs in the database as well.) The LP version originating from Neville's Warm Your Heart CD is indeed a very different mix and I've never heard it on the local airwaves.

Edited by Todd Ireland
