The absolute original backing tracks to the hits you heard on the radio, as well as 2-track mixes.

However, Shop Around by the Miracles is a mono backing track, and the 2-track mix is an alternate vocal take. Do You Love Me by the Contours is also the alternate lead vocal version that is out there....and the backing track alone reveals quite a bit of bleedthrough of the original lead vocal.

Edited by TomDiehl1

All those "Motown Original Artist Karaoke" CDs are the original vocal tracks and the original backing tracks.

They're so cool to listen to, especially the vocals alone. The one with the Diana Ross "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" actually has her "one more time" ad lib, missing from all stereo mixes of the song. You can ALMOST get an accurate stereo 45 version out of that one, though there are some slightly differences in the vocal on the fade out.

    Author: jimct
Subject: 2724
Posted: 13 November 2007 at 3:37pm

Andy, to me, asking for quality stereo for 60's Motown songs is like asking where all of the sexy 900-pound women are hiding!!!! :) Is/are there any? NO U.S. label cared less about stereo in the 60's than Motown did. Still, within my collection, I thought my two best bets would be "20 Hard To Find Motown Classics, Vol. 2" (it is one of the few tracks on there in mono), and the more recent "Motown Year-By-Year" series. The Velvelettes 1964 hit, "Needle In A Haystack" appears on this volume in great stereo (they went back and re-did most of these, from the original multi-tracks.) But, Andy, this series wasn't done for EVERY year. It started with 1964, SKIPPED 1965 for some reason, and then resumed with 1966. Unfortunately for you, Andy, "He Was Really Sayin' Somethin'" was from 1965! Truly a shame, because the song WOULD have been on there in stereo. Why don't you check the "Both Sides Now" Board. (The name of the Board is a play on words for this mainly "stereo version worshippers" Board.) If anyone can help you out with this, they would. Happy hunting!
