The backing track is the
same one in both versions, however for the stereo mix
they potted up some extra percussion that doesn't appear
in the mono single.
The vocals are a completely different take on the LP
version. As noted above the vocal arrangement in the 45
features a solo part, but all the vocals in the LP are
sung by the group. When you synch the 2 versions
together, you can hear it's an entirely different
performance.
Then finally besides speeding up the LP version they also
faded it a lot sooner than the 45, so when you slow it
down it still runs too short.
MM

You're exactly right about the difference in singers. There are differences in the mix on the vocals to be sure. Near the beginning when the singers sing "Baby what you doin?" it's two singers on the LP but drops to one singer on the 45. It also sounds like they bounced back and forth between two different singers on the 45, which is less obvious on the LP. It's almost as if that second singer's part was re-done by someone else for the LP. But it might just be a mix difference.

The 45 is definitely slower than the LP. I believe the LP also fades earlier than the 45, even if you were to slow it down to the 45's speed. Someone else will have to chime in on the mix differences.

I don't know about the promo, but the stock 45 is mono. I have heard over the years:
1) that they are different takes
2) a phasing effect on the vocals was dubbed onto the mono 45
3) the lp version is just speed up

Which of these are true?
Is only the promo mono or all commercial 45's?
Has the true "hit version" been released on CD anywhere?

Edited by Indy500
