Author: Todd Ireland
Subject: 5179
Posted: 20 December 2011 at 11:30pm

Ok... I've picked up a promo CD single of Del Amitri's "Roll to Me" on A&M 314588451 and here's my official verdict...

First, the track listing and run times agree with those posted by mainrhythm earlier in this thread.

Second, it turns out the "Vocals Up Radio Remix" and "Radio Remix" are essentially exactly the same! I honestly can't distinguish a difference between the two tracks other than the "Vocals Up Radio Remix" contains approximately one additional decibel of compression (which I can't imagine being noticeable to anyone's ears). That said, the vocals don't sound any further up in the mix than on the "Radio Remix". Thus, I would suggest the database should have a clarifying comment about these two tracks on the promo CD single being virtually identical.

Meanwhile, it should also be noted in the database that the Best of - Hatful of Rain CD does contain the "Radio Remix" of "Roll to Me" from the promo CD single. Now, the song actually tracks into the next selection on the Hatful of Rain disc, hence the reason why it clocks in :04 shorter than the 2:16 length on the promo CD single.

If the mp3 samples are accurate on Amazon's website, the single and album mix of "Roll to Me" are both panned hard left and right. Interestingly, I find the vocals to actually sound louder on this mix than on the "(Vocals Up) Radio Remix". Go figure!

I also remember the front cover of the "Roll to Me" CD single stating "STEREO" in retro-like fashion, much like what was often seen on vinyl LP covers in the mid- to late '60s when record labels started to more actively market stereo recordings.

Well, it looks like this mystery is going to involve some further investigation in order to determine which mix is on the Best of - Hatful of Rain CD (A&M 314540940). By the way, it should be noted that the song's fade is truncated on that disc.

Edited by Todd Ireland

According to the
band it was a nod to the early Beatles-style stereo mixes
because the song had that 60's "catchy ditty" feel to it.
But they also knew it was necessary to give radio a more
"current" sounding mix for airplay.

Side note, I'm surprised Promo Only supplied the LP
version.. they are usually spot on with radio mixes.. and
me myself has never heard the LP mix on the radio.

They also said the song from its inception all the way to
the recording sessions was written as a ballad. They must
have done about 50 takes, changing anything they could
but it was not sounding good. He said they were so sick
of trying, one of them said "ok one time real fast" just
get out their frustration, and the fast ditty we hear now
was born.
I thought that was a cool story.
-MM

Interesting... I expected the "Vocals Up Radio Remix" and/or "Radio Remix" to be the mixes with the hard-panned left-right channels. I guess the next step would be to determine which mix/version is on the commercial single release and on the Del Amitri parent LP/CD Twisted (A&M 314540311).

    Author: Todd Ireland
Subject: 5179
Posted: 09 December 2011 at 11:59pm

I'm glad you point this out, Aaron, because I've noticed that Del Amitri's "Roll to Me" is a different mix on my Promo Only Mainstream Radio DJ CD subscription series than on the Best Of - Hatful Of Rain CD (A&M 314540940) (which by the way has a truncated fade on my copy of the latter).

On the Promo Only disc, the opening guitar strum and cymbal crash is panned toward the left channel, the drums and electric guitars are panned almost hard left throughout the rest of the song, the acoustic guitars and vocals are panned almost hard right, and yes the vocals do sound "hotter" on this mix. By contrast, the Hatful of Rain CD has everything panned more toward the center and therefore has more of a "true sound stage" mix. I no longer have the commercial CD single, but if my memory serves me correctly I believe it contains the same mix as the LP. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Meanwhile, my research does indicate that remixes of "Roll to Me" were indeed made available to radio stations via the promo CD single issued on A&M 314588451. Here is the track listing and reported run times:

1) Vocals Up Radio Remix - 2:17
2) Radio Remix - 2:17
3) LP Version - 2:12

I do not have a copy, so I cannot confirm the actual run times, nor can I comment on the differences between the "Vocals Up Radio Remix" and "Radio Remix" (other than the vocals presumably being mixed "hotter" on Track 1.)

If anyone can provide any additional details as it pertains to the commercial and/or promo CD single, please fire away!

Edited by Todd Ireland
