my commercial cd single for the swv (sisters with voices) song "rain" issued as rca 65402 contains the below tracks
1-rain (lp version) (4:25 listed; 4:21 actual)
2-lose myself (lp version) (4:38 listed; 4:41 actual)
it's odd that the db states a 4:12 run time version as the "45 version" when it should be the cd single version running 4:21

I believe the database states 45 length and LP length Ed. Joel Whitburn reports the cassette single as running (4:16) so do you have the cassette single to time and verify that there really is no "version" issue here just a "length" issue? The cassette single (not the cd single) would be the proper format to use when determining either "length" or "version" since this song charted in 1998.

from 1998 on i use the cd single as the dominant format, so i will need to disagree with you supposition.....that being said i don't have the cassingle for this song.....anyone else have the data pat is asking for?

Joel Whitburn lists the cassette single as the Billboard official 45 version.

Now that we've recently determined that https://www.top40musiconcd.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10193&PN=1 - the CD single was the most dominant format in 1998 , outselling cassette singles by more than a two-to-one margin, according to RIAA data, I agree with Ed that the commercial CD single of SWV's "Rain" should be considered the official single version. Therefore, database CDs that currently contain a "45 length" comment will need to be revised accordingly.
By the way, according to Joel Whitburn's Pop Annual 1950-2023 reference book, the run time listed for "Rain" is now 4:21, so it appears then that the previously reported cassette single run time of 4:16 was incorrect.

This is another one of those confusing cases, because I went looking for a vinyl 45 just now, and there isn't one. What the database is referring to is the cassette single, which was apparently mistimed in the Whitburn book at one point.
It looks like SWV's Greatest Hits is where the 4:12 version originates from, which can possibly be more accurately described as "faded :10 early." My copy of this CD is in storage, so if anyone has it accessible, can you let me know when the first drum beat starts? The promo CD has the first beat at 0:08.5. Given that the song has a fade in with rain sound effects, it's possible both the beginning and end were trimmed for Greatest Hits.
In any case, no database notation will be needed, as the single version and LP version are the same.
