The 1980's came in first place with 49% of the vote; and the 1970s came in second place with 29% of the vote, followed by the 60's, then 90's.

I find it interesting (but maybe not surprising) that the 20's, 10's and 00's got a combined total of 0% of the vote. (This may explain, in part, why Record Research didn't print the weekly charts for the 2010's. I understand there's just less interest from the customer base for more recent decades.)

If this poll was conducted on this site in 2015 and 2005, I wonder how different the results would be. Maybe more votes for the 70's and 60's -as now there are probably newer and younger members of this site than there were 20, and even 10, years ago. :)

Edited by EdisonLite - 06 June 2025 at 6:36pm

But, my favorite decade in music will always be the 1970s. I was in radio in the mid 70s to the mid 90s and the 1970s takes me back to so many wonderful early memories in radio as well as the music I grew up with from the very early 70s.

Every few years, the pop world has brilliant years (1967, 1972, 1979, 1983). I suppose my absolute favorite time frame is stuck right between two of these years, in 1979-1983.

Much of my sweet-spot soul (Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, Chic, etc.) is mid-to-late '70s.

Much of my melodic rock favorites (38 Special, Squeeze, Martin Briley, Saga, Pretenders) are early '80s.

Much of my *least* favorite pop also is early '80s (the endless Air Supply singles, "Endless Love", the somewhat anonymous songs that seemed to serve no other purpose than filling a spot on a playlist like "Say What" by Jesse Winchester, the Stars On 45 and the other medleys). To me, the innovation of 1982-1983 outweighs the doldrums of 1980-1982.

All just my opinions, of course. All time frames have good and bad, but the 1979-1983 good stuff provokes an emotional response in me that the other time frames don't.

(And by that I mean from 2001 - 2006 - After the Teen pop / Latin / post Grunge period of 97-00). It's not that the music was bad per se, but if you were a music enthusiast, following the charts and listening to the radio, this was a weird period.

Were there bangers? Absolutely, no question. But actively Radio pulled the plug on pop acts fast in 2001. Retail singles were essentially stopped. Billboard's charts were fueled solely by Airplay which was overwhelmed by post-high-point Hip/Hop at that time, leading to years of any other genre suffering commercially. Never before or since has one genre monopolized the top 20 for so long, leading to no real variety visibility (or marketing / promotion dollars) going to other acts.
