Author: crapfromthepast
Subject: 10309
Posted: 05 November 2025 at 9:47pm

LP version (3:55)

The LP version is readily available on lots of discs.

I only have four masterings, though.

The oldest CD I have with the LP version is Silver Eagle's mail-order Formula 45 (1988). It sounds OK here.

There's a new analog transfer on Time-Life's 2-CD Southern Rock (1991). It sounds OK here, too. There are differently EQ'd digital clones on TM Studios Goldwav track no. 00007870 and TM Studios Goldwav track no. 00013938.

There's another analog transfer on Razor & Tie's 2-CD Goin' South (2001), which runs about five beats longer than all of the above. It's mastered a little too loud, and clips a bit.

Finally, there's one more analog transfer on The Best Of 20th Century Masters The Millennium Collection (2003), which has great dynamic range and sounds quite nice.

45 version (3:23)

Until yesterday, I thought that the 45 was just a simple edit of the LP version. Close, but not quite. The lyrics on the fade are different, as noted above.

On the few CDs I have with the 45 version, I think it sounds best on Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 7 1974 (1990).

There's a different analog transfer on Priority's Seventies Greatest Rock Hits Vol. 2 The South Rules (1991), which has an odd EQ that pushes the vocals much farther back, has added noise reduction (listen to the high end disappear on the fade), and fades the right channel more quickly than the left channel. It sounds terrible here; avoid.

Non-hit 1990 edit of LP version (3:31)

Just before the real 45 version appeared on CD, Rhino did an easy edit of the LP version for Have A Nice Day Vol. 13 (1990). The edit removes 32 beats from 2:30 to 2:49, and fades just a teeny bit early.

Unfortunately, the lyrics at the very end are the LP version lyrics, not the 45 lyrics.

The same analog transfer is used on Rhino's very rare Hard Rockin' Hits Vol. 3 (1993).

My recommendations

Granted, I have a really small sample size, but here goes.

For the LP version, go with The Best Of 20th Century Masters The Millennium Collection (2003).

For the 45 version, go with Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 7 1974 (1990). This disc was repackaged as Ultimate Seventies 1974.

Edited by crapfromthepast - 05 November 2025 at 9:55pm

That's actually an unsuccessful attempt at re-creating the 45. On the fade out of the 45 there is a piece of singing exlusive to the 45. It sings "Keep on Blowin", Keep on Blowin". But the unsuccessful edit (from the LP) goes "Keep on Blowin, Blowin, Blowin". The CDs in the database noted simply as "single version" are correct.
