Thanks, everyone, for your comments. The promo CD that I have is not what I thought it was - it's from a company called Hitmakers. I got it at a used CD shop here in Atlanta back in the late '90s. It doesn't list which version it is. I did get a copy of the Alternate Mix - thanks!

I don't have a copy, but ISTR the promo copy we received at the station I worked at in the mid-90s had 3 mixes of that song, the album version, the "alternated radio" version and one other. Maybe Jimct can verify this.

When the PD initially carted it up, he didn't pay much attention to the lyrics, and we played the N-word version for a couple weeks until someone pointed it out.

This song came on my iPod this morning and reminded me - I've looked high and low for what must be the Alternate Radio Mix of "I Believe" and never been able to find it. Can anyone send an mp3 to me? I agree that the N word is used for poignance, and it works. The station that played it in Atlanta always played the Alternate Radio Mix (over and over... and over...) :) and that is what I was used to. Just PM me. Thanks! Just wondering here, wouldn't it be nice if there was a website that exclusively sold promo 45's or CD singles.
It's be like Christmas year round!

There is a well known seller in Portland, OR that I've found does seem to have more promos than others, but they're not always inexpensive. But, that's what collecting is all about!

I know promos pop up on eBay, Musicstack and GEMM, but sometimes they're w-a-a-y overpriced. I agree. I'd say that collecting commercially unavailable promo versions is my biggest collecting interest. Sometimes I'd luck out & there'd be extra copies around at stations I worked at (mostly weekends/PT), but not always.
