As for the two singles from Al Stewart's "24 P/Carrots" album that didn't chart, "Mondo Sinistro" is identical to the album version except with the little squeak noise at the beginning removed, while "Paint By Numbers" was shortened to 3:33 and had the electric guitar re-recorded and brought way up in the mix to give it more of a hard-rock sound, just like the treatment that Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" got for its 45 RPM release.

I like the mastering on Rhino's Radio Daze Vol. 3
(1995) better than Songs From The Radio The Best
Of (1992) or Greatest Hits (2004).

This is really unusual, with a passage from the LP
version being repeated and spliced into the 45. Here are
editing instructions for recreating the 45 edit from
Rhino's Radio Daze Vol. 3:

Segment 1:
Extends from 0:00.0 to 2:23.7 of both the 45 edit and the
LP version.
Ends on a downbeat.

Segment 2:
Begins and ends on a downbeat.
Is the bridge, repeated for the 45.
Extends from 2:23.7 to 2:49.7 of the 45 edit.
Extends from 1:05.7 to 1:31.7 of the LP version.

Segment 3:
Begins and ends on a downbeat.
Extends from 2:49.7 to 3:51.8 of the 45 edit.
Extends from 2:23.7 to 3:25.8 of the LP version.

Fade:
24 beats long
Extends from 3:39.1 to 3:51.8 of the 45 edit.
Extends from 3:13.2 to 3:25.8 of the LP version.

Your mixdown will run 3:51.8, with edits at 2:23.7 and

I've been doing some updates to my '80 and '81 songs today and yesterday, and yes, to answer your question Aaron (albeit a year and 9 months later -- SORRY!), that's what occurs on the extended single version - I studied these versions today and on the Arista 3" CD single, the bridge is edited in a second time (at 2:23) (like the real single version) and they just let the song keep going instead of fading to 3:55 as they do on the single. The sax/horn solo ending is exactly as it is on the album version, but it starts 26 seconds later. That's what's on the Al Stewart Arista 3" CD single (a 3 song CD single also with the single edits of "Time Passages" and "Year of the Cat"). Interestingly, Arista released a 3" CD single of Al Stewart in the late '80s (with his 3 biggest hits) and the version of "Midnight Rocks" on there is 4:20. I guess this is a previously unreleased version. This version also has two bridges like the single. Another fantastic catch by Edtop40... "Midnight Rocks" does not have a designator in the database, but it should read "LP version" and "45 version" as the 45 is an edit of the LP version.

What's interesting is that both versions run (3:55); however, the 45 inserts the bridge into the song again after the horn solo (spliced in at 2:23). (This is the part that says "ahhh, you know you know it's easy.") They faded the remainder of the song early to the (3:55) mark.
