Author: Yah Shure
Subject: 1253
Posted: 13 January 2014 at 1:41pm

I'm not Jim, David; but I'll bite. :) My sister bought the stereo Look At Us Atco LP in 1965. I thought I had it, but apparently not. I did spend my share of time listening to it back in the day, however, and every track was in stereo.

I hadn't listened to the "Just You" 45 in quite some time, and in comparing it with the vinyl stereo LP track, the balance is more natural (the stereo mix is very wide, with vocals centered and most everything else panned hard to the sides; consequently the instrumentation sounds pretty wimpy when summed to mono. The bass is centered, but it's more muted than on the single.)

But one thing about the 45 mix really caught my ear: at the 2:45 mark, there are strings that come in. They're mixed so far off in the background, they sound more like the reverb decays rather than the actual strings, themselves. But on the stereo LP mix, those strings (which appear at 3:08) are mixed almost ear-piercingly loud in the left channel. Even when the stereo LP mix is summed to mono, those strings remain far more prominent than they are on the mono 45. Seems odd that the decision was made to really bury them on the single, although its extended ending there could have been a factor. Those strings serve as a climactic ending to the stereo LP version, which fades out soon thereafter. Meanwhile, the 45 still has a few more grooves to get under its belt at that point.

Edited by Yah Shure

Sorry if it might have appeared otherwise.

In further comparing the two vinyl tracks, I did notice that the distortion present when Sonny sings the second verse (especially noticeable on the words "don't know") on my 1967 album is also apparent at the same spot on the '75 LP. Ditto for the major sibilance distortion in the left channel on Sonny's opening "sometimes." If these were present on the stereo masters, it could have been another reason why CD reissues have opted for mono.
"Just You" on my vinyl promo copy of Atco SD-11000 (The Beat Goes On) has the LP lyrics, but runs (3:31), with a label and jacket stated time of (3:33). It is identical to the track which appeared eight years earlier on the 1967 The Best Of Sonny & Cher vinyl LP (Atco SD33-219) which runs an actual (3:32). Both of these vinyl tracks are in true stereo. The fadeouts on both tracks end quite abruptly.

But somewhere between 1967 and 1975, the sound quality of the stereo track went south. Although the 1967 LP is mastered at a lower volume than most other stereo LPs released that year, the bottom and top ends sound fine on my Columbia Terre Haute-pressed copy. On the 1975 album, the top end, in particular, is considerably attenuated, even though the track is about twice as loud as the '67 Best Of cut. Given the lack of any stereo release of the track during the CD era, it's entirely possible that the stereo master is gone and that the '75 reissue is either a needledrop or sourced from a much higher generation tape than was utilized for the '67 LP.

As for the (4:04) length, curiously, the mid-'70s black, gold & white label Atlantic Oldies Series reissue 45 states a time of (3:59), but it actually contains the (3:26) mono 45 version.

Edited by Yah Shure

Pat has done this for other entries where a longer version appeared on a later album. Perhaps someone with a copy of this LP can confirm that it is, indeed, the longer version that appears on many CDs and whether it is mono or stereo.

Given that the track has only appeared in mono on CD, though, I would not automatically presume that there ever was a stereo version of this song. Surely, someone would have tried to dig up a stereo version in the CD era if one existed. Even if the rest of the 1975 Atco LP is stereo, it's highly possible that "Just You" is mono.

Edited by aaronk

    Author: jimct
Subject: 1253
Posted: 10 January 2014 at 12:19pm

Cherbette, it is extremely common for Internet sources to make incorrect
"version" statements. Even the CD's own liner notes are often filled with
mis-statements and inaccuracies. We've already de-bunked hundreds of
them. Therefore, at this point, we give such sources little or no credibility.

Aaron's synopsis is both correct and complete. In 8/65, the "Just You" 45
debuted on BB, as Atco 6345. Both the stock and promo 45s were mono,
and run exactly (3:25). The original vinyl LP that included "Just You"
debuted in BB in 8/65, and was titled "Look At Us" (Atco 177). This LP was
initially released in both stereo and mono. The versions there ran (3:34),
and features some different lyrics than the 45 does.

Any other vinyl or CD releases for this song, that you may own now,
whether it was issued in 1975, 1991, or in any other year besides 1965, is
simply a later, "previously unreleased" length or version of "Just You".
These later-surfacing versions never appeared anywhere, during its 1965
chart run. Back then, these alternate mixes were simply filed away inside
the label vaults. This practice was extremely common at the time.

With all due respect, Cherbette, the plot here hasn't thickened at all. To
me, this case is 100% closed. I'm actually quite confused, as to why you
are still so sure something remains unresolved, as to this track's history.

If I'm still missing something here, please clarify. Thanks!

Edited by jimct
