Sorry for stepping into the quicksand, but I'm trying to sort this one out. I have a file in my
library labeled "new mix" with the runtime of 3:15. I checked Discogs and I don't see a Promo CD
single with this information. Does anyone have a second p CD single and could post the particulars?
My file could be mislabeled.

I disagree with your point of view simply because while a record company may promote a specific mix as the single version radio often determines which version gets played and often the public requests versions of songs over and over if they are really popular. For example in 2012 I never heard the slow version of Somebody I Used To Know that Gotye released off his album or the radio edit of the CD version. Instead I heard the Mike D Remix Edit (3:34), which was played on Z100 and hundreds of stations across the country. It was so popular and so in demand by the public that it became the de facto "hit" version. The Mike D Remix Edit was the one preferred by "Joe Q Public" and the one most requested. Is it on CD? No. Was it the single version? No. Was it in demand by the public? Yes. Who do you think supports the radio stations? The record companies? No the public does.

I don't know what your confusion is over hit or single version or why you don't get what Aaron or anyone else is saying here. The artist records the music. The artist gets paid for the music. Sometimes the artist has no say over what the lead single is, sometimes they do. Sometimes the Artist gets a hit and has no input at all over that hit, how its edited or how its released. If you want to believe that every Artist can control their own music distribution or that they make the edits, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

I'm not attacking you, I am just pointing out that your logic is faulty. Either support your arguments with evidence or go along with the other 99.9 percent of people here who fully understand what you don't seem to grasp. If you are just here to whine and complain and attack board members for their views and thoughts be prepared to defend your position with logical answers. Support your logic. I'm sure you are a reasonably intelligent person, capable of making sound rational arguments. All I've read is you calling me "HipHopArchivist" and picking on board members for their stance. You have your opinion and a right to it. Right now the way your acting isn't making you any friends here.

I'm sure you will find some way to respond to me and point out I am wrong or being rude, just asking you to base it off facts, not your opinion. Like Aaron said if you want the "me" vs "us" mentality I am sure Aaron and I could suggest other forums that will cooperate with your need to do that. If you can't show myself and others respect then it begs to question why you are posting here.

Why do you say the rules are not applied uniformly? The official US single version, to us, is the lead track of the 2-track commercial single configuration. Largely, the commercial vinyl single is considered the official format up until cassette singles outsold them. Then, the CD single dominated in sales at some point in the mid-'90s. A few others would know those years/dates, as I'm not positive what they are. The "single version" is not arbitrarily decided. In other words, it doesn't matter which version was the radio hit, if there was a "Single Version" on the maxi single, or any other factor. It keeps things very simple that way, and again, this is for database purposes. What was the hit could very well be a different case, but to reiterate again, "single version" or "45 version" does NOT always mean "hit" version. It's a strict reference to the version that appears on the US commercial 2-track configuration.
