The version that appears on the two cd's in the database is the stereo LP version (I do not have the mono LP to verify one way or the other so let's call it the stereo LP version for now). The 45 has a different harmonica as you point out, different whistling in the introduction and I believe different strings. Perhaps we can get Eric or Varese to give us the mono 45 version somewhere down the road.

I've been A-B'ing my entire collection and have been coming up with interesting observations which I will post from time to time, for what they're worth.

I think someone far more knowledgeable than me will have to say whether it's an LP version or an alternate(although I'm not sure who might be moreso than the guys at Varese). However, to my ears, the only difference I'm hearing is the harmonica, which sounds like an overdub. The vocals are the same and I think the instrumental background is the same, or it didn't jump out like the harmonica.

Can anyone verify if the version appearing on the Best of disc is an LP version, or are we looking at what might be best classified as an alternate mix here?

(P.S. - Welcome to the board, rbtwt!)

I just pulled out my WB 45 - you are right. The harmonica solo appearing late in the 45 sounds shrill and authentic, like Barney Fife is playing it in Mayberry, while off-duty. The Varese CD version sounds as if the "harmonica sound" switch has been activated on an all-purpose 60s/70s consumer keyboard - not shrill at all. You're correct, it's harder to tell any difference during the earlier harmonica part, but the late-song sound difference DOES jump right out at you. There aren't many CD sources for this song - the correct 45v simply may not be on a CD. So, as we so often determine; hang onto your 45! I would suggest the database be updated with your findings, Rbtwt - nice work!

Edited by jimct

In fact, it sounds like a completely different harmonica track, especially at 1:50 going into the last verse. Big difference. It's on both the Varese GH and the Teen Time CDs. Anybody know anything about this? And where to find the correct 45 version?
